I had to hospitalize my husband last night because of his extreme depression and suicidal thoughts. I took him to the ER, waited for 4 hours before he was admitted to the Psych Ward. Have just been to see him, it is 2:30 the next day and he still hasn't seen a Psychiatrist. I thought by taking him to the ER and getting him admitted it would ensure someone saw him, but it doesn't seem so.

I am getting really bitter about the medical care here in this country, maybe I am wrong, but he has been under a Pscyhiatrist for quite a long time, has been on medication, and yet has still had a breakdown. I just don't understand why we bother with all the doctor visits, expensive medication etc. if it doesn't stop him from the extreme depression anyway.

I am angry, frustrated and at my wits end and I don't know what to do anymore.

Thanks for listening everyone.

Sounds like you are having a tough time. I am so sorry for your frustrations. I certainly don't blame you. All you can do right now is play the waiting game. Have you thought about maybe changing Dr's at this time? Sounds like the one you have is a little off with his prescriptions. What meds is your husband on, if I may ask? Does he talk to his therapist regularly? Does he meet with his psychiatrist at least every 2 or 3 months. I am not a Dr. but I am bipolar and if you need a shoulder, I am here.. I only threw these questios out to try & help....one more thing.......are you positive your husband is actually taking his meds as prescribed?

OK, enough outta me...lol Best of luck to you.

Hi Glory, thanks for your response. I have thought about changing docs, but as far as I can tell this one is the only one with a specialty in bipolar who is on my insurance in this area. They had him on Risperdal only before his breakdown, after he started to go down they put him on Lexapro. So now he is on Risperdal (.25 mg) and Lexapro (15 mg). Since he started going down six weeks ago he has seen the psych every week to two weeks. He doesn't go to therapy, I have tried everything to get him to go but so far, no luck. I am not positive he is taking them, as we are separated, I don't know exactly what he does, but I believe that he does.

Oh Boy DLR, something is nagging at my brain saying he is not taking them...I sure hope I'm wrong. DLR you are still his wife so see if you can get an appt. with the doc to discuss hubby. He can't give you details but he might tell you something about what's going on. I know you feel helpless, I would to in your position. Just hang in there. I am here for you as are a bunch of others.

Love

You might be right, I don't think so, but I don't know that for absolute sure. I have seen the empty pill bottles, but I guess that isn't absolute either. I'm waiting on the Psych doctor who is on call at the hospital to call me, but she obviously hasn't seen him yet. I guess I thought he would get more immediate attention than this. Thank you Gloria for you and others support, it means a lot.

DLR,

I agree with you on the medical situation. We took our son to the ER one morning in January. We arrived at 6:30 am. They put him in a room on the floor and it was 3:30 before the psychaitrist arrived. Needless to say, that is the LAST place he EVER wants to go to again. A bad experience all around and not one thing solved. It is indeed tragic that there is really not much help for someone in these episodes. You have to do a lot of digging to try and find some kind of program in your area. But that, of course, is just the beginning. Getting your loved one to go is the biggest part of the battle.

It seems to me like more and more people are evidencing Bipolar Disorder. Is this true or is it just that I have become more aware since having a family member who is affected?

I think you are probably just more aware of it since your sons diagnosis. When you say some kind of program, what do you mean? Sorry, I am not from here and so I don't know a lot about how things work here, particularly in the medical field which seems so complex and lacking in at least this area of mental health. I know it will help if I can get him into therapy, and I think maybe this has shocked him into thinking again about therapy. I sure hope so.
