My husband of 20 years left me eleven months ago. He had a breakdown (I believe a full blown manic episode)and went to live with his parents who are 3 blocks down the road. He was diagnosed BP2 and has been on Depakote for four months. At the beginning, he was mean and cruel to me, saying hurtful things. I still stood by him. I told him everyday he was not alone, that i loved him. I have taken great care of myself in the meantime..., I exercise and diet ( I was a sz 18 i am now a 12), and I have a good support group.

My question is this; I have noticed that he is kinder towards me, more caring. He seems to improve everyday but he also seems no closer to coming home. Am i enabling him by staying in regular contact? Any advice, i don't want to live in limbo forever.

mckay that to me is not enabling. Thats showing him you love and care for him. Enabling to me would be covering for him and not holding him personally responsible for his actions during an episode (ya know saying thats o.k. it happened because of your disorder don't worry about it) things like that there's more but thats just oe example. Your seeing improvements because his meds are working and he's been seeing his doc. If he's stablizing I'd still contact him and if he's better talk to him about everything be honest and be calm about it....................TXB

Does you husband have a regular physcolgist??Maybe you could suggest to go with him..It might help you understand and let him know you support what he is doing..You are not enableing he is taken meds and doing what is right then you support him with all your heart..If he trys to pull away ask why..
