Is there such a thing as situational PTSD?

I think so. I never really have symptoms until I get triggered.

I know PTSD is based upon traumatic event(s), but I did not know if a situation that one was in could cause it. I can see how having symptoms can trigger an episode.

When I'm triggered I sometimes get amnesia and / or short term memory loss. My brain blocks my ability to form new memories, like someone in the middle of a car accident and later being unable to remember. It started 2 years ago and scares me -- What other symptoms will I suddenly develop???

I try to regain control by researching the brain, and since the adrenaline is pumping I remember all of it. My coping mechanism is to become fixated and worried about what I learn (like how the hippocampus shrinks when bathing in cortisol), thereby forgetting the original trigger. Episodes lead to learning lol Smile

Zadie, I know that the more I research the better equipped I feel. It's the uncertainties that make me feel more anxious. I've never studied how the hippocampus shrinks when bathing in cortisol before. You'll have to fill me in on that one. Sounds really intriguing. I love to learn and I love to learn about new things.

Highly anxious people have a lot of cortisol running through their brain. The hippocampus actually gets flooded with this cortisol and begins to shrink -- it's really really common amongst psych med patients. The hippocampus then fails to work as well as it did, though I don't know how this is manifested. So next time you get anxious, remind yourself of your shrinking hippocampus! Your anxiety will get displaced Laughing

I have a huge book called, "The Owner's Manual For The Brain" -- so addictive! It's at least 3 1/2 inches thick. I'm also reading the book, "Musicophilia" by Oliver Sacks (he wrote "Awakenings") -- it's all about the brain and music. I love it! The brain is so wonderfully complicated!

Take care,

Zadie
