MDJunction to me

carmen33"When I first came to MDJ, I was in a very dark place, and feeling quite alone, I don't know how I found this site, but I have been very grateful ever since, all of you have offered insight to the illness of Bipolar and the other things going on with me, being here has allowed me to find friends, and to feel safe in discussing things that I would never have shared before.

I believe it has also offered me the chance to reach out and help others. A simple Thank you, is all that I have to offer, to this site and to the wonderful people here.

the doctor gave me a mega dose on methylprednisolone in shot form for inflamation around the base of my spine and in the muscles. Then he put me on a 6 day taper pack to wheen me from the stuff. Has anyone had any experiance with this stuff. I can't sleep, thirsty all the time, my head hurt, I am supper moody. Is it normal? I have been on steriods befor but not this type or this much.

Hi

I am familiar with prednisone / cortisone / and all of the other names for cortisone - they are all the steroid cortisone.

Cortisone is a really good and special steroid that reduces inflalmation locally. But it will cause you to retain water - so be careful. Whole body - it causes all sorts of problems - do not overeat with it - you will gain weight.

Go to www.drugstore.com and once there look up prednisone.

put the dose in as say 40 mg and read down all of the manufacturer's insert data.

And you must taper it down after having it for more than a few days or weeks - so do exactly what the doctor says - period.

I have been getting cortisone shots sometimes as often as every month - which is bad. and getting prednisone pills for pulminary problems when needed.

The steroids have put me back into heart failure. Bit will not do that to you.

Give them a lot of respect - they are primo primo meds for inflamation.

I'm an Advocate

Here's the pertinent info you need, in case you don't have it already:

Side effects

Methylprednisolone may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

headache

dizziness

insomnia

restlessness

depression

anxiety

unusual moods

increased sweating

increased hair growth

reddened face

acne

thinned skin

easy bruising

tiny purple skin spots

irregular or absent menstrual periods

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

swollen feet, ankles, and lower legs

muscle pain and weakness

eye pain

vision problems

puffy skin (especially the face)

a cold or infection that lasts a long time

Honestly, your symptoms sound pretty typical of corticosteroid administration. And methylpred is a synthetic corticosteroid. If you got a higher dosage than you're used to, you'll exhibit more exaggerated symptoms than you'd normally experience. Not really surprising to me, but keep an eye on them. The side effects listed above are more typical of long-term, IV usage, but they can be experienced by anyone who has received any methylpred.

Hope this helps some. Hugs!

Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it can't happen.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is my opinion only. Nothing I say is meant as offense, I offer what I can as help. I believe in educating myself on all my medical issues and being my own advocate, for no one else with do that on my behalf. I recommend we all do the same!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.
