I am new to this. I have burning in my neck that is also very tender to touch. Excrutiating electrical type pain when i touch a small spot on back of my neck. Is there something that can help with pain? My pcp started me on cymbalta but no help yet. I have spinal stenosis in my neck with bilateral narrowing on mri from 2 years ago. I have ddd. And tear in disk in lumbar. They are saying fibro but I know there is more to it than that. Is surgery the only answer? Ice and heat helped with mid and lower but other than initial numbing relief pain returns within just a few moments.

Sad . any suggestions or possibly advice?

I'm an Advocate

Hey Loretta,

It does sound quite like FMS, actually, and it's very common to have electrical shock-like pain with FMS. It could be any other type of neurological condition, tho. So the fact that you have DDD along with spinal stenosis with bilateral narrowing... you've got pinched nerves, essentially. It sounds like you might have an anular tear? That's often what a disc tear means, but you don't state enough info for me to know for sure.

I'd say you're probably a serious candidate for surgery. And it's probably going to be one of the best ways to take care of the issue. Of course there are concerns with surgery, but when you have multiple issues like you do, and nerves are involved, surgery can often be the best source of correction.

I would need to know more info about what is going on as far as what kind of surgery is recommended, and what kind of tear is going on... Plus, what they know about the tear, what caused it.

As for FMS, how were you "tested"? It's important to know how the diagnosis came about, or you can't be certain you have it... There are a lot of falsities where FMS is concerned, but there is a hallmark for having it. You need to have at least 12 of 18 tender spots in your upper/lower/left/right sides, and they are specific spots that need to be tested by the doctor--usually a rheumatologist, but other doctors like neurologists know.

So, if you can answer a few questions, I can probably help some more, and so can others here. At any rate, I hope you get to feeling better, because I know it's very difficult to deal with the constant daily pain. I have Lyme disease, FMS, and CFS (chronic fatigue), which complicates my back pain. I'm NOT a surgical candidate, but I think it would make me feel better if I had the choice!

Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it can't happen.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is my opinion only. Nothing I say is meant as offense, I offer what I can as help. I believe in educating myself on all my medical issues and being my own advocate, for no one else with do that on my behalf. I recommend we all do the same!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.
