Hi Mary, Welcome to the site! I have been told that it depends on what is actually going on in your back, how many discs are involved- if it is more than 2 levels surgery is less likely to be effective. And it also depends on what your diagnosis actually is? I am actually getting ready to have surgery on Friday at Mayo hospital and my neurosurgeon to me for MY diagnosis that this surgery will have an 85% chance of succees. What is your diagnosis? What tests and treatments have you already had? Have you already seen a pain management specialist? You have come to the right place all of the people here struggle with pain as you do. To be able to make an informed decision, you need to learn everything about your condition that you can and we will help you any way that we are able. Let us know how we can help.

Welcome to the group. This is the place for people with a bad back and pain. fill us in on your diagnosis and maybe we can share some info and tips that we have learned. Back problems also can lead to weak legs and pain. Over time Neuropothy has been a big problem for me. Is this something you deal with.

HI, I am having L5/S1 fused - an ALIF (anterior lumbar interbody fusion) at Mayo hospital day after tomorrow 4/30/10. My Dx is spinal stenosis, with nerve root impingement and sciatica, a spinal bifida at S1, the spine at this level is so degenerated that I have air pockets in the bone and the disc is completely gone so it is just about bone on bone. I will let you know how my surgery goes-I am very excited about it and LOVE my neurosurgeon and the team I am working with!

I'm an Advocate

Hi Mary,

Welcome to the forum. I apologize that it took me so long to welcome you, but I've been away sick (and injured!), so I'm finally trying to get back into the swing of things.

I have to echo Ally's first post, that until or unless we know exactly what's wrong with you, what your actual diagnosis is, and what kinds of tests you've had, it will be hard for us to help you. If you can let us know more about your situation, we can help you to make more informed decisions. So long as we don't know, we can't really tell you what kind of success surgery will have for you. We also need to know what kind of surgery has been recommended for you. All of the details that you can provide us will help us to help you.

Please feel free to share, that is what we're all here for. We're normally a pretty active group. I think it's been hard for everyone having me gone and Dana (handle: blazyn) working and busy as well, to keep things going as strong. I usually check in daily, and Dana's been a lot more active until lately as well. So, things have fallen apart just a bit lately.

But everybody usually comes together when everybody needs it! So, let us know what you need and how we can help so we can see what we can do for you.

Hugs,

jen Smile

P.S. Ally, dear, tell us how you're doing when you can! Smile

Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it can't happen.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is my opinion only. Nothing I say is meant as offense, I offer what I can as help. I believe in educating myself on all my medical issues and being my own advocate, for no one else with do that on my behalf. I recommend we all do the same!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.

Something has changed within me/Something is not the same/I'm through with playing by/The rules of someone else's game/Too late for second-guessing/Too late to go back to sleep/It's time to trust my instincts/Close my eyes and leap...I'm through accepting limits/Cuz someone says they're so/Some things I can not change/But till I try I'll never know/Too long I've been afraid of/Losing love I guess I lost/Well if that's love/It comes at much too high a cost/I'd sooner buy Defying Gravity/Kiss me good-bye I'm Defying Gravity/I think I'll try Defying Gravity/And you won't bring me down...
