I ask this because I was told to take my son to a Pediatric Neurologist and I'm not sure that it's the appropriate next step. What can this Dr. diagnose? I feel like I have lose ends when it comes to my son. I'm sure he has been fully diagnosed. I don't know what to do next. Please help!

Hi hun

Autism is a Neurological disorder.

if your child HAS a diagnosis then there is no real need to see anyone except intervention proffesionals unless he suffers seizures, headaches loss of balance..

he may want to test for seizures and rule out any other brain disorder.

If you have a diagnosis I would ring them and tell them that and ask what your child needs to go for (Exactly)

momof5inny -

My 7 year-old son has Asperger's and was diagnosed at age 5. We have been brining him to see a Pediatric Neurologist since he was 9 months old for Absence Seizures. We see this doctor approximately 5 times per year. When we FINALLY got Justin's diagnosis it was not from the Pediatric Nerologist, but rather a Pediatric Neuropsychologist.

Please take spectrummum's advice and call the clinic first. Find out if they diagnose for Autism Spectrum Disorders. I believe some are educated in ASD and some are not.

When we told our Pediatric Neurologist of Justin's diagnosis all he said was "Oh, I would have said ADD and OCD".

They are a different breed of doctors, that's for sure, and when you are going to "specialists" they do tend to make us feel like we don't know anything, but remind yourself that you're the one paying for the services and they work for you.

Good luck

my daughter has been seen by many different type of doctors. She was referred to a neuropsychologist for a neuropsychological testing but her insurance would not pay for it along with speech and OT. I just started seeing a chiropractor for myself. I hear from a lot of people who rave about them and even take their children. I haven't taken my daughter yet, I don't know if she would do well (it scares her, just like the dentist). I would have her see the neuropsychologist if her insurance would have paid for it.

What types of tests is the Neurologist going to perform since he's already had an EEG?

Currently we see a pediatric development specialist, she's his primary physician. When my son was diagnosed we took him to a neurologist initially for his EEG.

We were lucky in that we lived in Raleigh and were able to take him to Duke Med and see a Dr. that specialized in autism. He helped us coordinate care with therapists and our primary who was not experienced with autism. He also suggested some treatment options that helped our son quite a bit. When we moved he also recommended our current Dr. since he had worked with her.

We've also seen a Dr. at Shriner's that helped with his toe walking and suggested an MRI to make sure that there weren't any physical issues related to his potty training problems. I can't recommend them enough. It really helped my son to be in AFOs for 2 years. Toe walking is pretty much gone and he was on the road to doing damage that would have had to been repaired surgically. Shriner's doesn't charge either so it was all free. We got the application & suggestion through our Dr.
