I love joining groups that offer personal experience dealing with autism. My daughter, age 7, was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, sensory integration dysfunction and speech delay at the age of 5. I am now an advocate and support group facilitator in my community. I do have a question for the group. Ok, at my first group meeting I met a mom of a 4 yr. girl with high functiong autism. The woman told me the doctor diagnosed her with high functioning autism rather than aspergers because her daughter has a speech delay. I find that odd because my daughter also has a major speech delay yet was diagnosed with aspergers. The same exact doctor diagnosed both girls. What do you think might be going on here?

cognative issues are also involved.

Speech is the main factor between them boththough not the only criteria in diagnosis.

I have a diagnosis of AS and though I could speak I chose not to a selective mutism if you like,but I have an a high IQ and am able to do most things ,where has HFA will have some degree of speech and cognative delay

if any delay is shown HFA must be given.
