Hello everyone. I recently joined the MD Junction website to access the autism support group. I am a board certified music therapist and I have gained most of my experience working with individuals who have autism or related disorders. I joined this group to support families, provide guidance if I can, and begin to network with others who are involved in working with individuals who have autism. I'll be posting more soon on how music therapy is used with individuals who have autism, but in the mean-time you can visit musictherapy.org for more information from the American Music Therapy Association's website. Thanks!

I have been depressed for a very long time. The ONE thing that has pulled me out of the gutter time & again is music.

Unfortunately, when I was so over-medicated; I wasn't able to enjoy anything. What I like about not being medicated is that I am able to enjoy music: it gives me hope!! Without hope, what is there when things are as bad as they can possibly get???

During the past 3 years of being confined to a wheelchair due to stachbotrys mold poisoning that nobody ever caught & being told I couldn't walk because I didn't want to, being verbally abused by a nursing facility that I was in during that time, doctors pissing on me (they might as well had), etc....... The one thing that pulled me out of that entire mess & gave me hope was Bon Jovi singing Bounce!!! And I played that song over & over & over again. And still do when life just sucks!!

And it took music to give me hope enough to get out of that wheelchair (even though it took months to fully be able to walk on my own) & say the hell with what those quacks & everybody else thinks!!! And for some reason or another, what I really needed to hear was the words & the music of the song Bounce. If you haven't heard it, you should.

Just remember; when all hope is gone...... as a music therapist..... you have an opportunity to give HOPE where there isn't any left. No doctor, therapist, or any other health care person is able to do that.

So, when all those other health care persons tell you it's hopeless; DON'T BELIEVE THEM!!!! They just don't understand that somehow music brings hope.

Thanks for the insight and web address. I am a Pre-k teacher who has two beautiful and amazing autistic children in my class. I use music in a therapeutic way in my classroom. I find that soothing music such as jazz and classical music help the autistic children in my classroom focus better, calm down when they are over stimulated, and retain more information when they are learning. I recommend music therapy to anyone who works with or has autistic children.

I agree with music therapy. My daughter use to receive music therapy back when I was living in Chicago but unfortunately she doesn't receive it since we moved. So now once again I have to take it upon myself to learn more on it so that I can do this at home. So if you have any tips it would be greatly appreciated. I know music and lowering the lights really helps calm my daughter and sometimes taking her out of a overwhelming atmosphere, even for a few minutes to regroup and then go back helps to. I have classical music at home cause I have always been a fan, especially when I use to be a ballet dancer which I have considered putting my daughter in classes for. She loves music and loves to dance and sing, I think music therapy should be more known and more of an option and provided more for these children. I believe it really helps!
