My son was diagnosed this past December with PDD-NOS. He had a fixation on "self gratification". He is about to be 3yrs. He would constantly play with him self even if that meant he had to pull it out of his diaper. I am not really sure what happened to make him stop but he did. Now he has replaced that with constant scratching. He will scratch until he bleeds on his entire body. I have no idea how to make him stop this. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I am willing to try almost anything.

Hi welcome I am shell mum of 6 four on the autistic spectrum,I also have Aspergers syndrome.

Are you sure the scratching is a behaviour just because it appeared when one went does not mean it is a new one.

Scratching gives a shiny sensation it makes skin feel like glass, and then there is the burning sensation it provides like scratching a mosquito bite but amplified.

I am taking it that he is under sensative to pain myself and my children are the same.

I suggest waiting till he is asleep then cut his nails has far down has you can get them, also see if there is an alternative to his nails for scratching (a cat scratcher a sharpening stone they will give the same sensataion to his hands.

This is all new to us. No one that we know has any problems like this. I have allergies and eczema so I thought maybe that was the reason he was scratching also. But we have had him allergy tested and he has been on different medications that should stop any itch. He did not however have any allergies. So this is the only thing I could think of is that it may be a stimming behavior. I just bought a book and have been reading through it to help understand all of the different things he is going through. I am not sure if it is the feeling he gets on his skin from scratching or if its the feeling of having his hands busy. His nails stay cut down as far as I can get them. It is much worse at night when its time to calm down and go to bed. I was just hoping for some suggestions on ways to maybe distract him from doing this.

Distarction I find works best in my house I have behaviours ranging from poo smearing and eating it ,head banging biting the back of hands punching themselves amd more i just try to divert.

once he is scratching try to tickle him with a pantbrush cotton wool a piece of fabric ,you have to show him another better way to stim
