You are eligible to claim Disability Living Allowance if you are aged between 16 and 64 and have needed help for three months because of a severe physical or mental illness or disability, and you are likely to need it for at least another six months.

If you are already getting Disability Living Allowance when you reach 65, it can continue as long as you still need the help

If you’re claiming for an ill or disabled child

You are eligible to claim Disability Living Allowance for a child who has care needs substantially greater than a child without disabilities of the same age. This includes for a child:

aged three months or over who generally needs extra help or looking after

aged three or over who has severe difficulty walking

aged five or over who needs help getting around out of doors

You can claim DLA before a child is aged three months, but it will not be paid before the child reaches age three months unless they are terminally ill.

If you have care needs

To receive Disability Living Allowance, you are considered to have care needs if:

you need help in connection with bodily functions – this includes things such as eating and using the toilet

you need help with washing

you need supervision to stop you being a danger to yourself or to others

you are terminally ill

You can get Disability Living Allowance for your care needs even if no one is actually giving you the care you need.

If you have mobility needs

To receive Disability Living Allowance, you are considered to have mobility needs if:

you are unable or virtually unable to walk, or have no feet or legs

you are both deaf and blind

you are severely mentally impaired with severe behavioural problems and qualify for the highest rate of care component

trying to walk would endanger your life or affect your health (for people aged 3 or over)

you need help with getting around out of doors (for people aged 5 or over

If you need guidance or supervision to help you get around safely, you are considered to have mobility needs.

Some people will be entitled to only the care component or the mobility component of DLA, others will be entitled to receive both.

If you are terminally ill

If you have a life expectancy of less than six months there are special rules to help you get Disability Living Allowance quickly and easily. There is no need to wait until you have needed help for 3 months.
