I have a question to all my friends out there. I am a teacher of children with special needs. On Monday, I have a child starting whose parents have only had their child in school for 6 months, although he is 4th grade age. He comes from a small village in Mexico, and the school did not allow him to attend.

The child has autism, and the parents' plan is to have him attend my program on Mon and Tues, and another program Wed to Fri. The programs are at 2 different schools. I think this is a terrible idea, and would like to have him full time in my class or the other class. Parents had an area board advocate at the meeting, and this is what the team came up with (I was not at the meeting)

Am I wrong in thinking this is a bad move for a child with autism in particular? He already has trouble adjusting to school, and being socially appropriate (I know, big surprise there!)

Just wanted to send out feelers. I tend to be a mother hen for my kids and get all worked up when I think they are being wronged.

Thanks, Spectrumum. The child started today and we had a great day. I sat his mom down at the end of the day and spoke to her about my concerns. She is going to talk to her spouse and get back to me tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me that she makes the right decision! Otherwise I will have to work on her some more!

Thanks, Shell. I sometimes face discrimination with teachers, too - it makes me madder than hell!

If only these teachers could be in our kids body for a short while. There is actually a case where a parent sued in civil court - and won -when a teacher refused to provide accomodations. Yipee!
