Was anybody, or anybody's child misdiagnosed with Autism? I was, when I was 18 months old - I wasn't talking at all, and I was rather unfriendly. I talked for the first time when I was 3, but I never stopped since. And got friendlier, too.

I wonder what they use to diagnose it, and how often they're wrong. Didn't look into it much, but I'm very curious.

I did have some psychological problems at some point, but it sure as h...l it wasn't Autism.

Lack of communication and social interaction would only be part of a diagnosis. There are a lot of 'normal' children that present with little/no speech and social issues before the age of 5 but that doesn't mean they would be diagnosed with autism, because that is all they present with.

Take my younger son for example, he is in the middle of the diagnosis process at the moment. I took him to daycare the other day and she mentioned that his dislike for certain noises came and went and I commented that this was often the case with Autistic children, depending on how they felt that day. She then made the point that other children were like that too as I think she, like others feels my son is not Autistic. Well yes other children do dislike noise and that one thing alone does not confirm his disability. But then combine that with his lack of speech, his lack of awareness, his social issues, developement issues, self harming, hyper/hypo sensitivity issues and the picture becomes a little clearer.

I think if you get a diagnosis on two criteria alone, then push for a second opinion, or give your child time to develop with help for those issues. A diagnosis shouldn't be made on those things alone.

I've heard of a few cases where children have been mis-diagnosed and on each case the child was young and had only met 50% or less of the criteria for Autism.
