Hi Everyone,

I am paying lots of out of pocket cash to go to this DAN doctor (Defeat Autism Now). Paying cash for heavy metal testing of hair and stool and supplements like DMG, cod liver oil, B12 injections, glutathione cream. Just wondered what the general feeling out there is of these alternative treatments, if I'm wasting my money, are we on track, Do these lab results really mean anything? Our mainstream pediatrician and neurologist at Mass General Hospital in Boston told us not to waste our money. But these are the people who also didn't think the diet was worth trying either, and the diet has changed our life. We feel like going dairy free has saved our son. He still obviously has autism but his ability to connect with us, smiling, laughing, less stimming, is a whole world better... I'd love any opinions on the subject. Also wondering what other alternative therapies (I hate that term) are working for people that I don't know about. Thanks for posting... I think God for this website and the kindness of the people who share their time and wisdom and answer so many of my truly troubling questions. Happy Holidays. Jenny from Boston

Hi

I dont believe personally that any of the defeat autism now docs are doing anything special with our kids

its just another scam made up by neurotypicals.

Instead of getting autistic parents advice they assume that these protocols will work.

My children do not have any artificial interventions including diet, chelation or any of the other scams out there.

They play on the emotions of the parents convincing them that this very expensive treatment will cure there children it does not.

we must except our kids for who they are instead of trying to change them or cure them.

There s no cure if there was someone would be very rich indeed .

children need junk food and taking essesntial minerals and vitamins out of there body cannot be good.

I work with autistic children and the ones who are eithere on the diet or have chelation are very sickly thin weak kids its awful to see.

My children only have therpies done by me and both are doing wonderfully at the moment.

trust in yourself and in your child believe in your child not interventions

My mom is going to try water therapy in july. it's in florida, and it is a bit pricey i think (About $3000 for a week) but the people there are very friendly and there are so many testimonials saying that it works. their website is http://www.waterplanetusa.com/programneeds.htm if you want to check it out, if you want i'll let you know how it works out for my brother!

I personally have not tried a DAN doctor yet but I fully intend to. Diet is so crucial to how we feel and act. "You are what you eat" is so much more than just words. I totally feel when my autistic son eats the wrong foods his behavior is so much worse. I have tried going gluten free but it is so hard and I am going to go full force right after the holidays are over because I know it is worth it. The reason I have not tried a DAN doctor yet is because I have not found one in my area so if any of you out there know a doctor in the Boston/New Hampshire area I would be forever grateful. Thank you in advance for your help. Jenny from Boston, I would love to know who you use.

In a nutshell Dr. Hubbuch in newton , MA is who we see and I like her very much. love4ellis, check your private messages, I sent you the phone number.

It is anxiety provoking to me that the docs at Mass General don't believe or put any stock into Dan Doctors , or the diet and disagree with all the supplements I am giving. Its just that I know taking milk out of my son's diet changed his life immeasurably , so I just don't want to disregard anything that could possibly help my son just because certain traditionally trained doctors don't put stock in holistic, alternative approaches. Chiropracters used to be thought of as quacks too, and now they are widely accepted and paid for by insurance. Folic Acid used to be considered alternative until the studies were published as well as DHA being added to formula. Those were all things long recommended by holistic practitioners which have also gained acceptance in traditional medicine. I think a lot of these tests and supplements could very well be just part of an autism protocol in the next ten years. I could be wrong but I just can't disregard it if its possible, financially within my reach, and most importantly can't do harm.

Once again I would love it if anyone could respond if they have any experience with carnitine . Bye the way, my son has been on the diet for almost 3 months now and still has rosy cheeks, chubby legs and looks healthy. I will certainly keep a close watch out for him to start to look sickly or weak or pale and respect others' experiences with diet and supplement related issues which are different than my own. I feel that milk provides vit A and D but those are only additives anyway so you can add these into the diet in other healthy ways. Therefore in taking dairy out of the diet you do need to make sure they are getting enough calcium, fat, calories and protein. Happy Holidays to all! ~ JennyfromBoston...

I wholeheartdly agree with you about diet and supplementation. It is sad that "traditional" doctors don't agree too. I have learned what to tell them and what not to tell them. It may not be right but I don't need a lecture. atsumal, I did get your email and thank you once again for it. SharonfromPortsmouth

Hello all! I am new at this so please bear with me. My child was just diagnosed with autism but where I live, I've never heard of a DAN but I have, however, heard of the diet on The Oprah Show. If someone doesn't mind explaining this to me, what exactly does a DAN do? Since I've heard of the diet but don't know exactly what I'm suppose to be doing, can you please let me in on what kind of diet everyone is talking about??

Hi there, and welcome! A DAN doctor stands for Defeat Autism Now and these MDs have come up with a protocol to follow regarding slowing down the childhood vaccinations and not givine them all together (like instead of giving the MMR they would give them all - measles, mumps, rubella - but separated out and over a time span so as not to stress the immune system more. The diet is no milk products, no wheat. Also means no gluten (the main protein found in wheat) and no Casein (main protein found in milk). Be careful because wheat and casein are in almost all processed foods. But if you look at past postings here related to diet you will see people with great ideas of how to survive this diet! A lot of us are trying to do it. Lots of good web sites. I'll try to post a list of them. And I have a good cookbook, I'll post that too when I can. My child is 17 months old now and has a hard time with lots of foods. So far he basically lives on bits of meat, fish, puree veggies, puree and soft fruits, brown rice baby cereal mixed into other purees. We are also on alimentum which is formula, expensive but luckily paid for by insurance because my son doesn't eat very much and I needed to get more calories and fat into him. when he is eating enough I will be changing to rice milk. On the diet some people (including myself) stay away from soy but many others can introduce soy into the diet without a problem.

I saw the oprah show too. And it was that day that I knew my son had autism and I sought out new doctors since my pediatrician wasn't paying attention to my concerns or all my sons delays . Everyone said not to worry because he smiles and makes great eye contact. They were wrong. Hang in there! And continue to post. So many people here have helped me so much, so I'm happy to share what I do know.

The DAN doctors also help you to decide what supplements are good for your child because there are a ton that are recommended. The will also run tests that traditional docs don't usually run. Look under the posting I wrote under organic acid testing and supplements and you'll see a little more I've written about that.

There are plenty of people who don't believe all this extra stuff is necessary. It can get expensive! But I am so far trying to follow these ideas as best I can because there are lots of people who truly believe they help their kid.

Good luck, and keep writing!
