Hi, my husband and I have a daughter who is 7 1/2 and was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome last year. We also have an almost six year old daughter as well.

We are planning on trying the GFCF diet for our Asperger daughter but we are going to try eliminating dairy first instead of doing it all together. We are very new to this, and pretty overwhelmed by it. Our daughter had some major gastro problems when she was an infant. I nursed her and started to eliminate certain foods to see what was causing her so much gas and pain. Never did find out what it was, any food i stopped eating, she still had that problem.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what kinds of improvement, if any, do you normally see in an autistic child who is put on this special diet? I worry about her weight too. She is only 44 pounds and she is 4 feet tall. Could this be caused by being intolerant of certain foods? She has many moments of "zoning out" even as a baby, and she has high anxiety, which is typical of Aspergers.

If the diet helps, would it help with any of that? Also, when we eliminate all dairy, does that include eggs too? We are planning on doing this in a week to give us time to become more knowledgeable of the diet.

Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

i am shell mum of 6

one with autism one with aspergers one with traits one with lbd i also have AS

The diet will not work for everyone,it is not a miracle cure though many have said it is.

before you start the diet cheack with your gp to see if your child has any allergies .

i dont personally agree with it but i respect the people who do.

At first it will be very difficult because the body has to get rid of the toxins that are in the body the child will litterally cold turkey .

behaviours can take months to show a differance.

What i always consider is

as the diet improved my child

or has he not enough nutrients to do the behaviors.

I work with autistic children also and those that are on the diet have a lot more problems health wise than a child who is not.

I have some info on my group if you would like to nip over and read

Hi, eggs are not dairy. Also, Aspergers kids make more gradual gains on the diet than children with autism do generally. You should get both an IgG and an IgE blood allergy test done on her first so that you can remove the gluten and casein (as well as her other allergies) so you don't replace the gluten and casein with something she's allergic to.

Here is a great link to get you started on the diet. http://www.talkaboutcuringautism.org/gfcf-diet/dietinfo.htm

As a single parent of 2 children on the diet (since 1998) myself, I understand the financial challenges associated with it! I have tried to help thousands of families over the year learn not only how to cook GFCF, but also how to do it without going broke!

As for the schools, please know that FEDERAL LAW says the public schools must provide nutritional meals that fit the diet while the children are on campus at NO cost to the families! Here is more information:
