I'm 38 years old and believe I may have some form of autistic spectrum disorders (ASD).

Unfortunately I have no money or insurance, but since whatever is wrong is significantly affecting my life, I'd really like to get some kind of help and at least a diagnosis. The situation has become torture.

Any suggestions on what I can do? I'm pretty desperate now.

hello, you have to do all you can do for yourself if you feel helpless know there is no one that knows about you but you.So it is maybe a small step maybe a big step. you can call you local clinic you can call a dr's office explain and have them look up some help for you to get you on your way to better health. It may take time but things are done one step at a time.until then about the way you feel know you have already taken the first step in asking.you know some other steps you can take and every step you take is one step closer to help.HANG IN THERE.

This must be a really hard thing to be going through. I wish I knew the answer to what you are asking. Here are just some basic ideas...I'm not sure if they are realistic or not for you but here goes...

1) you can google "am I autistic", or "symptoms of autism checklist". Some sites allow you to take a test and can give you an idea of if you have some ASD issues or not. They are generally geared toward young children though.

2) Can you apply for state insurance? Income guidelines do apply, but generally speaking, you can get state insurance so you can at least see a doctor.

3) Go to a clinic where you can look into a "sliding fee" scale. Payments for your appointment are generally reduced to begin with but they also only make you pay a certain amount based on your income.

4) If you are really struggling, perhaps your family or friends or even a church can loan you some money so you can at least go through some Autism/Aspergers screening.

5) research more about autism/aspergers. See where you stand.

6) Pray about it...sometimes going through this alone or even with other people who you may not be able to relate to because of your condition can be hard. God created you...he can help.

Thanks very much for the responses.

Just to clarify, as I should have to begin with, I am actually at the point where I have exhausted my personal research.

Based on all reading I have done, I am almost certain I have ASD. Specifically, PDD-NOS since I seem to not meet the full criteria for Asperger's (for example, I experienced no cognitive or language delays during childhood). I could easily be wrong though I suppose.

Unfortunately, I am a layman. I have enough skill to have gotten this far, but life restrictions and the condition itself have me against a wall now.

Aside from not even knowing where to go for such adult screening, I'm pretty wary of even trying. Another doctor who doesn't care at this point is not something I can handle. It was always pretty disturbing to hear "I don't know" coming from multiple doctors in the past. Plus I wouldn't know where to get the money. And if help exists without money, I've never found it. I'm also fairly isolated right now. Perhaps I even lack the motivation and ability. I don't know anymore.

It's hard for me to do anything anyway since I also have other health and personal issues going on and I don't know what is affecting what or if I'm just wrong about everything. Maybe I just have psychological and personality issues and am reading too much into it because of the exhaustion and frustration.

Again, thanks for the replies. I do appreciate it. I'm probably just beyond anything anyone online can help with now. Oh well.

Thanks. I don't have a GP since I had grown too frustrated with docs in the past and currently because I have no insurance either.

There's nothing where I live. Closest town with anything is Tomball, Texas. Houston is the nearest "big" city (maybe an hour south of Tomball?) and I'm sure there are lots of docs there, but I don't think I can handle going there. Driving is getting too difficult, much less driving for hours.

If anyone knows a good doc (for adults and familiar with ASD) around or even near Tomball, please let me know. I can always charge one visit and not pay the bank. Doesn't really matter anymore I guess. I'd be happy just knowing for sure even if I can't afford any follow-up. I just don't want someone who will say "I don't know" or tell me it's all just depression from circumstances (unless it really is...).
