My son was JUST diagnosed with mild-moderate autism. I had been suspecting this for months but everyone even though they had seen some of things I was seeing, kept assuring me it wasn't this. I feel relief in having a diagnosis but I am also scared and ashamed to admit a little sad. The Dr. we are going to is wonderful and works with thousands of asd children. He is confident that since my son is 18 months and based on his personality and easy engagement, he will be able to outgrow many or most of his "symptoms". we will start therapies in the next couple week and had already started speech therapy.

Do you ever find that you don't want to share the diagnosis with people? I read the other day that some choose not to share because if their child improves etc, they find that a stigma is attached even if their child has outgrown many things. sorry for rambling. I feel positive but still so worried and I am due with my 2nd child in a few weeks so it's a very overwhelming time right now. Thanks so much!

Hi welcome.

If the child is high functioning and is "coping" then only certain people need to know i.e school, hospital, dentist etc.If on the other hand he is not hgh functioning then outside people must be involved.

My aspie is in mainstream and none of the pupils know about his diagnosis only the staff. It is up to you who you tell though in some cases it can be useful for certain people to know about it friends family etc.

use the diagnosis on a need to know basis.

Welcome dar12!!!!!!

I agree with Shell. You do not need to tell everyone about the diagnosis, only those involved with you, your family and your child.

I definately think that withholding your sons diagnosis is FINE!! Some people just dont need to know!! Why put a label on him?? People are always to quick to label other people anyway! No need to add fuel to the fire! Just enjoy your son for who he is and who he will become. You seem to be getting all your therapies needed and know what you need to do in order to help your son succeed. Be your son's biggest advocate and dont bother telling people about his diagnosis unless its necessary like for safety purposes... Good luck and good luck with the new baby!!!
