Yes! Boxerchick I'm so excited for you and Chucky. Most exciting of all is the specialist wants to talk to YOU and get to know your son. Wow, what a crucial thing that is. I can't wait for you to tell us all about it!

Our school is small too, but willing to go above and beyond for Chelsea's 4 student ASD class. They even set up a mini carnival on the playground for them today. It just goes to show, any school can be great for our kids if they want to be.

 Thanks for the update a...

sleepystar Welcome :)

I am a Grandmother of a now 4 yr old with Autism and I must say it' was a challenge.
She was non verbal when I got her 1 1/2 yrs ago, not potty trained either. It' took 4 months to do it. I got her the pull up and we went shopping for underwear, she picked out Dora the Explorer :) I also put a chart up on her door and every time she did potty in the bathroom, she got a sticker and placed it on her chart. Very exciting to her and we applauded and shouted good job! ...

FIRST WE STARTED WITH A STEP BY STEP BEDTIME ROUTINE THAT WE POSTED ON THE WALL, BASICALLY BRUSH TEETH, PUT ON JAMAS, GET IN BED WITH FAVORITE TOY, A BED TIME BOOK ABOUT GOODNIGHTS, THE SAME BOOK EVERY TIME, IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT IT DOES NOT CHANGE UNTILL THE CHILD SUGGESTS IT, THEN A PHRASE THAT WE ALWAYS SAY WHILE SAYING GOODNIGHT,( OUR IS, SWEET DREAMS SUGAR BEAN, I LO...

That is truly a gift, your little boy has :)
And he will grow up to be a witness to others.

Sorry for your loss. It's always difficult to lose a parent, but your son is right. In time the heart will mend and you will be left with wonderful memories....

Hi Nurinu,
Firstly, I am sorry to hear that you are going though such a difficult time and my thoughts are with you.
Secondly, I would like to add something regarding the video games. Your son's 'attachment' regarding the video games could actually be his life line which is helping him to distress from a world that is so confusing for him. This may also be why he wants his own routine as making sense of the world can cause many anxieties thus the need for control is needed. My son went throu...

If you have an old phone charger, maybe give that to him? As long as it's not plugged in, it's not going to harm him. My kids went through a similar phase, and the easiest thing to do was find something similar that wasn't important (or dangerous!) and let them play with that, with supervision. Eventually, they found new stuff to play with....

Juggler,

Is your son in a special needs class? Or do they have him in a regular class? If he's not in a special needs class, see if they have one in your area. My daughter, who is autistic, is in one through the school district, and the teachers have been able to do wonders for her socializing and acting out (at least in school - still working on home behavior).

As for going back to your husband - don't go back to an abusive relationship just because it's familiar. It could only make m...

My son is a 16 year old teenager and normally teenagers (some adults too) allow their emotions to over shadow their true expression or 'meaningful thoughts'; but my experience has been the opposite. He is very wise and has a real understanding of his emotions, however he just doesn't portray some emotions such as grief, hurt or sadness the way we may. That, by no means, means our children do not feel or acknowledge such emotions. It simply means they have a different way of dealing with them, w...

* Very little money donated to Autism Speaks goes towards helping autistic people and families.

Only FOUR PERCENT of Autism Speaks' budget goes towards Family Service grants, while 44% of its budget goes to research. Only a minute portion of this research is aimed at improving the quality of life of those with autism and their loved ones'. Most of the research that Autism Speaks funds is devoted to causation and prevention , including the prospect of pre-natal testing (think Downs Syn...

Dr. Grandin has a new book out. She had an extensive MRI of her brain done prior to writing it. The results weren't at all surprising to her. My father sent me this article/book review. (Yep, it begins again with the sending of things). I haven't read the new book, but I found this quite interesting and wanted to share it with you.

 Some key points -

The MRI revealed Dr Grandin has 4 times the typical number of connections in a brain area that controls the visual system. ( She de...

Oh yes, boosmommy, I hear you loud and clear. Our 2nd Developmental Therapist would come at 9 am. It was a joke too. My daughter was sleeping until 9 at that time. Our sessions were only an hour, and part of the time would be my daughter eating breakfast. She was always in her PJs as well (not that it mattered, but it just shows she was still waking up). The therapist was a joke too. She was a daycare helper and a registered nurse whose only experience with autism was watching over a ...

Aww love, it is not your fault! You're doing your best and that is plenty. It is NOT easy at times raising a child with autism. It's exhausting on pretty much every level. It's also not easy on relationships. People you considered friends disappear. (In my experience, this could be your choice or theirs). Marriages suffer. Family members don't understand your world. We've all been there in one way or another. You are not alone. We welcome you with open arms. :)
