I have been experiencing some strange episodes for approximately the last month which have not been successfully diagnosed yet.

Just tonight I went shopping and even though I felt fantastic most of the day, I did have difficulty with my shopping. I was stocking up and had my cart loaded to the gill and it was all I could do to push it to the counter. I felt winded but while standing in line recovered without too much distress.

I carefully put my groceries on to the check out very slowly and then once again back into the cart once they had been checked out but had a difficult time pushing the cart out of Walmart.

I loaded my groceries up and got into the car and all the way home I just felt as if I wasn't getting any oxygen. I was doing mechanical breathing all the way home and found that when I leaned forward it seemed to help a bit.

I have never had asthma symptoms that I know of before but have had starting Dec 29th several episodes in which I had rapid heart beat and felt as if I was going to pass out or drop dead, I honestly didn't know which. I took two trips ER and all tests performed there came out normal.

I can go into more detail if needed about the symptoms I was feeling. I just wondered if this sounds remotely familiar to anyone here on this site that has been diagnosed with asthma?

hi Damselindistress, it does sound like you are not getting enough oxygen, but does your chest feel tight? and it is harder to breathe out than to breathe in ? Or just overall harder to breathe? Generally with asthma, it is easier to breathe in than to breathe out.

It is best to get to proper tests done that is more than just at the ED. Do you smoke or have been smoking in the past or been in smoking environment? There could be a lot of things that could be wrong and it is hard to know for sure from just describing symptoms because symptoms can all sound the same and could be anything.

I work in a ICU/CCU and we do get a few asthma patients, and also people whose lungs are pretty much damaged from smoking long term, or even people with pneumonia or pneumothorax (the sac in which the lung are encased in have got a hole and instead of sucking air into the lungs, the air from outside is going from the outside into the sac and pushing the lungs into a small mass). All of them can present as being short of breath, with faster heart beats because the heart has to beat faster to compensate for lack of oxygen.

Hope this helps.

Well to try to answer your questions.

I just feel like I'm not getting any oxygen even though I am breathing in and out. I would say that the exhaling is more difficult than the inhaling. And I almost had a feeling that I was hyperventilating. That if I would slow down my breathing it would help.

I am not a smoker. We might have a mold issue in our home that I noted could be a trigger of asthma.

We have a basement that floods right now repeatedly, so until we get that fixed we continue to have reoccurring moisture. I did try emptying my lungs all the way by blowing all of my air out before I took another breath and it least it kept me from experiencing any more symptoms.

The last couple times I felt this way were at lunch I was talking quite a bit to a superior next to me while I ate and I suddenly lost my appetite, felt like my head was just beginning to spin a bit, and felt starved for oxygen, and a trip I took to the mall in the cold weather with a long walk through the weather, by the time I got inside my heart was racing and everything felt surreal. It took me a good 10 minutes to recover or more standing in line at the Gap. And I questioned whether I would be able to get myself out of there or I would need to call an ambulance.

I have never experienced symptoms like these before in my life and with all the tests they ran they did not find anything abnormal.

My initial episode occurred two weeks after having chicken pox. I am 42 and was taking care of a woman with shingles. I recovered fine from the chicken pox but 14 days later when my two year old presented with his blisters and fever I myself got a fever again that night and felt crappy. The date was December 23. I went to work on the 25th and just felt bad but no unusual signs or symptoms. After that I was off work until the 29th. That day I had nothing to eat until lunch. At lunch I had a hamburger and potato and leek soup. Immediately after eating I got a headrush and felt like I needed to lay down. Within one hour I was symptomatic I was first sitting and got a wave of light headedness that made me feel I would pass out. After that passed I tried to stand up and walk. Right away I got a scent of ammonia and told the people standing across from me to go get a nurse that I was going to pass out. I got myself into a recliner and elevated the foot rest. The nurses came and called a squad right away and put oxygen on me. I could not feel it at all. Had tightness in the chest they said my heart rate was 140. I they stated was changing in front of them and got pale and clammy. I was very frightened. I had a feeling that I was "going to go" I did not know where. I had difficulty talking and spoke in only one and two word sentences. The squad came and I could not stand up I told them if they did I would go, so they lifted me onto the gurney. Before they came I could feel my whole body almost losing function and I felt as if I was going to have a bowel movement. Once again I had this sensation in the squad but did not. They did an EKG which was normal, vital signs were normal by that point, could not start an IV, it was like my veins disappeared into no where land. Chemstick was 124 which is normal.

I basically recovered in the ER and felt whiped out, looked like crap and noticed blood pressure was going up and down with the lowest there being 80/30 and 70/40. They ended up letting me go and discharging me to the care of a outpatient physician an internist.

When I went to him he put me on a holter monitor and from looking at my labs said I was in viral syndrome.

The week between my ER trip and my trip to the internest whenever I ate a normal meal my blood pressure seemed to drop, I had to lay down and my heart would race. The holter monitor showed a heartrate of 148 twice which he said was concerning and I did have symptoms both times this occurred.

He said he would see me in one month.

On the way to his office and for the week following I had midsternal chest pain and was having it my second trip to ER when they did more blood work, an EKG, a CAT scan and a chest xray. They could not find anything wrong and suggested it was anxiety. After the pain in my chest I went for days with an intense discomfort that I would get around my upper left shoulder and into the neck. It was a very scary feeling. The neck pain was on the left front lower side and was so intense it felt as if a mass would eventually bulge out from my neck. This is something I told them about while in ER the second visit but continued on after that visit.

My vitality is slowly increasing. I am not feeling the intense pressure that I did feel in my neck. I can feel it lightly at times but it is nothing like it was.

It seems my only remaining symptoms at this time involve an activity intolerance in which I just feel as if I am not getting any oxygen and my heart rate increases.

Other symptoms that I have missed are after my first visit to ER I did have an uncomfortable feeling in my torso the next day that moved down and then had smelly bm for about 4 days or so.

Also I had to miss more time from work the first week of January. I developed a fever again low grade and just felt really poorly. I think the activity intolerance was more pronounced at that point and it was difficult to imagine that I would ever feel better.

So far this is a mystery illness. On my second trip to ER the doctor said my WBC's were in normal range so I should be out of the viral syndrome at this point.

Other people at work are starting to experience the muscle pain that I did. One other girl also had the tightness in the chest and went to ER. She was told she had a pinched nerve and put on prednisone and flexeril. The other person's pain was in the right arm istead of the left but she said was so intense that she almost cried. She ended up with uncontrollable diarrhea right after.

It is reassuring me that others are experiencing these things, although I have to tell you I heard a very scary story from the one who had the chest pain. She said when she told her mother about it she said her mom told her that an hour west of us a virus went through a hospital and many of the staff got sick and missed work. One very young girl was feeling poorly, got checked out in ER they found nothing and sent her home. Her supervisor had told her she'd call and check on her later, she did and when she did the girl's son answered the phone. He said he couldn't get his mommy to wake up, and so help was sent. The 24 year old woman with two children had died in her bed. When I hear these stories it makes me have anxiety to the core because I was feeling so close myself. The pressure was so intense in my left chest neck shoulder area that it was all I could do to maintain my respirations, calm myself and try to get myself positioned. For nearly a week there I felt that the only place I would be safe was in ER, where I could be given life saving efforts if I collapsed.

Part of me thinks I will never know what caused this.

I have been told I should go to a cardiologist but I'm not sure my heart is the source of the problem. I think something else is putting the strain and pressure there.

I really should have kept a diary of my experiences.

For a while there it was one day at a time and trying to stay focused.

It is possible that in your case (with having a virus of some sort) that you might be hyperventilating, then having more strange physical symptoms which may trigger an anxiety/panic attack. I have heard of these mimicing asthma attacks before and being quite terrifying and causing all sorts of strange physical sensations.

I have had one episode of hyperventilating (mine was in conjunction with an asthma attack, and a temperature and humidity change) and the symptoms were actually scarier to me that the normal asthma attack. I felt a lot weirder and had stranger symptoms when that happened. I hope you get some answers soon and that this stops happening.

I want to thank everyone for the time you are taking to read and respond to my post. I realize I may not be experiencing a true asthma like reaction.

At this point I think I am just trying to research any possible cause for my reactions in order to understand things better.

When the first incident initially happened I had researched leeks and saw that leeks do have an allergen in them that can trigger an anaphylactic reaction.

My signs and symptoms that day actually fit the description when I read symptoms experienced by people that had experienced a severe allergy reaction.

The only problem with that theory is I have not continued to eat leeks or other foods in the leek family such as garlic, onions, and chives. And the symptoms happen at various times of the day.

Once again thank you for your kind responses and for taking the time to read and respond to my post.

In reading all of your symptoms, I'm inclined to think that the possibilities could be asthma, pleuresy, chostochondritis (sp?), low blood pressure, or pneumonia. There is a form of pneumonia that is called "walking pneumonia" where you aren't that affected, you can still go on with your life, but you only have a few symptoms, so that's possible. It's possibly asthma, pleuresy is very painful, so I'm not sure how much that would be likely, but it's possible. chostochondritis is also extremely painful, so again, not sure how likely but it could be. Low blood pressure could be occuring, and it would affect your circulation...

I would recommend you research some of the things I listed and see what of them might be most likely, given your symptoms. Then talk to your doctor and see what he or she says, and ask to have tests run that could pinpoint the exact issue, whether it's x-rays, breathing tests, MRI's, or CT scans--with or without contrast dye. All of those might be warranted to ensure you know what's going on.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

*hugs*

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.

damsel,

if your allergic to mold it could trigger asthma.

I suggest you find products get rid of the mold you can get them in your grocery store.

Ya know, I read the mold and then completely forgot to post. Not only can it cause asthma as Belinda suggested, but I forgot to mention that it can really just cause all sorts of other issues. If you have a toxic mold problem in your house, it can lead to a number of other health issues, and you really need to find a way to remove it from the home and ensure that it isn't triggering anything, whether it's asthma, or another condition. Sometimes it's not necessarily asthma, but it can get into your lungs and mimic asthma.

Here are a few links to help you make some decisions about the mold in your house and what to do:
