Often, anxiety goes hand in hand with low self-esteem, and for that reason we often find it difficult to find the will power to 'help ourselves' and rely on others for support. Self help books are a great way of providing third party reassurance and guidance, from usually highly-qualified authors.

For some, medication or counseling may be undesirable because of social stigma or fear of side-effects. Self help books allow anonymity (especially from online book shops) and allows us a greater opportunity to help ourselves.

NB: That said, I would not advise replacing medication or counseling with a self help book, books can compliment existing treatment quite readily.

Self help books come in a variety of forms and there are a wide range available for anxiety and depression. It's really a case of finding one that suits you best and sticking to it. Some of them have been commonly described as 'life saving' or 'life changing'.

Whether or not these self-help books make miracles happen is open to question and skepticism, but if you don't try; you'll never know. As they say, 'every little helps'.

One book that I've found helpful is "The Anxiety Workbook". It takes you step by step through the processes and habits that lead to your anxiety attacks and helps you find ways to control them.
