hello i've been suffering from anxiety, depression and insomnia for years. nothing seems to help at all. i've been on antidepressants(effexor, zoloft, paxil, etc) made my anxiety worse. for my insomnia i've been on lunesta and ambien. made my insomnia worse which i didn't think was possible but yeah i bounced off the walls with it. i was on both an antidepressant and sleep aid for a bit but again that didn't help. i would take 4 hours to fall asleep and only stay asleep for an hour if i was lucky. so i stopped taking those.

as of right now i am only taking buspar. my dosage was just increased. isn't helping but this doctor seems to think she can cure it. i've heard that so many times in the past lol. i've been dealing with all this now for over 15 years. i'm learning to accept my "lifestyle" but at the same time it is highly stressful. it's hard functioning on a daily basis with little to no sleep, highly stressed/irritable, etc. nothing seems to quiet my mind.

any suggestions??

oh - suggestions:

yes, relax more. try to go out for walks a couple times a day to help you relax and unwind.

try a nap: during the afternoon. just relax on the bed on a nice pillow. do not attempt to sleep. just lie there for a while and relax. try to unwind.

do a breathing exercise: here is a link to agreat one for anxiety and panic :

read up on calming techniques. I will leave finding that to you for now. But you can ask for help later if you have any difficulty.

add some new hobbies

Raoul

Unusual that a med like klonopin (clonazepam) would not offer you any relief. You said "was" as in past tense in talking about the meds you have tried. Are you currently on anything else now other than the buspar? I seriously doubt that the buspar will help since the stronger anti-anxiety meds did not help. Do you think the lack of not being able to sleep is causing a lot of your depression and anxiety? Do you exercise at all? 15 years is a very long time and never being able to find anything to help you.

*have you ever tried or thought about trying meditation? If you do it right before you are ready to go to bed, it can often help you fall asleep easier and then stay asleep after you fall asleep.

If only there was someway to convince people more that these things really do work and really do help but you have to practice them regularly. I think many people try once or twice and then they just give up too easily sometimes. If your body can easily elicit the fight or flight response as we see in panic/anxiety disorders, it can also elicit the relaxation response. This is what naturally calms us down after we have become frightened.

We can enhance this effect in addition to what the body tries to do naturally by doing the breathing things you cited Raoul. It does take some work and dedication though.

Hi Coley,

I've been seeing a neuropsychologist and she swears by the relaxation techniques. She explains it is a switch system where your are either in sympathetic mode (anxious) or parasympathetic (relaxed) we can change the way our body operates but unfortunately it takes a lot of work.

She suggests deep breathing exercises 15 minutes two times per day and then hypnosis. To be honest I have difficulty getting that relaxed.

But I am doing much better she did admit that maybe it is too much of a shock to my system and we should try to gradually bring me down to the level to be able to eventually do the hypnosis.

So practice this as much as possible. I like to really try to focus in on what I'm doing during the day and try to stay out of anxiety type thinking as much as possible but it is a difficult habit to break.

Try some of these things and see if they help.

I told her last summer even doing jigsaw puzzles seem to help.

I got so relaxed and methodical with it that I felt really different afer a while at the puzzle. I would do them until I was sore from the bending over the puzzle in an awkward position.Smile

Use your mind to be creative and think of what you might be able to plug into that would bring you to a relaxed state. Exercise is great too to work off some of that exceess adrenaline. But the relaxation exercises are supposed to make the big difference for us.

2 more days of school-yipee!

thanks for the replies & suggestions. i do walk twice daily. once in the morning and then evenings before dinner time. as of right now i am only on the buspar. my doctor wants to try trazadone(sorry for spelling) next. i do think my lack of sleep is causing alot of my depression and anxiety. the over tiredness definitely plays a factor in my opinion. my doctor feels it is vice versa. that is the only thing we don't see eye to eye on. this is my 6th doctor who has said she will cure all of this lol. i've had sleep studies done on me many many times. my brain constantly runs and nothing stops it. i have already limited my caffeine intake down to one cup a day if that. the rest of the day it is water. i have a healthy diet and am a fit person. even if i go out on the weekend and play a sporting activity all day long, still won't sleep at night. i don't want to say that i give up but i'm at that point now.

Wow coley, the sleep seems to be a major issue. Have you ever had anything like a sleep study conducted?
