Hi, I'm new here. I've been suffering from anxiety and severe panic attacks since the age of 7. I have had periods (sometimes years) without any attacks, but recently have been having them almost every day to the point of limiting my normal activities. I have been taking 20 mg of Paxil for at least 8 years and it seems to have lost its effect this past year. I'm terrified to come off this medication to try something different because I've experienced such awful side effects from the withdrawal (the "zaps", the crazy mood swings, the tiredness). Has anyone out there been taking meds for this length of time? If so, has any of your medication stopped working over time?! Need to hear some friendly words.

Thanks,

Kat

Hi Kat, I haven't taken medication very long but my dad did. His paxil also wore off and he needed to get a different dose. Have you talked to your doctor about it? They may have something that will be helpful. They may be albe to change the dose of paxil so you can stay on it and not have to change meds.

I so understand about not wanting to get meds that take the "life" out of you. I was put on some for nerve pain and I couldn't get out of bed. It was really bad for a long time.

Do you know what triggers you attacks? You started having them at a young age. I started having mine from abuse issues as a child.

I hope you can find a medicine that works for you. We are here if you need to talk!

I will do my best to help Your friend, Chris

Hi Kat,

Nice to see you. I too haven't been on medication very long but so far so good. I know what you mean about awful side effects. That is the downfall of taking medication. I don't have any experience with paxil so can't really offer any advice to you about it. I agree with Chris that you should get an opinion from your doctor about changing the dose to make you more comfortable. Have you spoken to your doctor about a possible cause for you anxiety and panic attacks? I'm here for a chat anytime and would like to help you the best that I can.

Gemma

Hi Chris and Gemma,

Thanks for your reply and concern... it's nice to know I'm not alone

I haven't seen my doctor about this since it's been a gradual worsening over the last several months, but I see now that an adjustment is probably necessary. It was a long cold winter, too and that never helps.

I've been to therapy off and on before and have never really found where the anxiety started. I was the child of an unwed teenage mother and put up for adoption days after I was born, in foster care for six months, then adopted by my parents. Even though I don't remember it, apparently it can have a lot to do with separation anxiety, etc. I also know that my mother was an addict and not certain if she used while pregnant, so there are many unknowns for me. All I know is that I can remember as young as 7 or 8 waking up in the middle of night feeling like I couldn't breathe and absolutely terrified. So it's been almost a 30-year struggle for me.

Thanks again for your kindness and support. Just knowing there are people willing to listen is a huge relief.

Kat.

Welcome! I have to change my medications all the time. About 8 months into taking them they lose their effectiveness. I am now on Prozac, again. Have been on and off this for years. Before that have taken a lot of them. Hope you can find the right one!

Hi Kat, I was doing some reading about paxil and know that other medications will interact with it and it can lose it's effectiveness. Are you taking any new medicine? You may want to look it up on the internet and check it out.

Your right, that may have alot to do with your anxiety! Adoption is hard on a person. Just not knowing the facts about it. Did your parents treat you well? Did you know at a young age that you were adopted? Seven is very young to be going through anxiety. I know mine started early because I was abused.

If I ask to many questions, just tell me to knock it off!!! I like to have as much information as possible before I give out alot of advice. I just don't want to tell someone something and have it be totally off the wall and turn into a big misunderstanding!!! It causes everyone problems then!!! I hope people will understand that about me!

I hope you are feeling welcome here and find it as helpful as I do. I have made alot of very wonderful friends and get more support here than at home. The people here are amazing!

I hope you are feeling better and have a great day! Your Friend, Chris
