What are the pro's and con's of taking anxiety/depression medicine. I'm currently in therapy, but they think its best if I do both. I want to know everything that is important to know before I start the medication. Any advice?

to be honest medication effects people in many different way and you will never truly know what is good or bad or right for you unless you acctually try them out yourself.

however main side effects of anti depressants can be lack of sleep, decrease in apettite and shakes/tremmers

main side effect i get from anti anxiety meds is sleepness(very sleepy), slower reaction times and hang over effect.

when your on medication you have to be very careful with alcohol until you know exactally it effects you.

meds should make your mood easier to deal with if they dont then try something else.

not sure if this has been helpful or not but all the best anyway xx

Hi...I take a very mild anti deppressant only 1/2 Tab every morning & find that this enough for me....If I take a full tab which is 20mg I find it makes me too sleepy ....Just try & start on a mild tablet & see how you go....All you can do is try them....But they help me...Thanx B Smile
I am not a medical doctor.....My opinion is purely that....I try & give the best advice to help others from my own experiences.......

Sometimes we need to stop analyzing the past, stop planning the future, stop figuring out how we feel, stop deciding what we want, and just see what happens.

Forget the past, it has already happened, worry not about the future, it has yet to come. Concentrate on today, and make every moment count.

all medications have side effects and have to have monitering of one thing or another and remembering to take them can be a real hassel

however if nothing else works they are a necessary evil

Please, please forgive me,
But I won't be home again.
Maybe someday you'll look up,
And, barely conscious, you'll say to no one:
"Isn't something missing?"

You won't cry for my absence, I know -
You forgot me long ago.
Am I that unimportant...?
Am I so insignificant...?
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?

Even though I'm the sacrifice,
You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me,
I'm all alone.
Isn't someone missing me?

Please, please forgive me,
But I won't be home again.
I know what you do to yourself,
I breathe deep and cry out:
"Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?"

Even though I'm the sacrifice,
You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me,
I'm all alone.
Isn't someone missing me?

And if I bleed, I'll bleed,
Knowing you don't care.
And if I sleep just to dream of you
And wake without you there,
Isn't something missing?
Isn't something...

Even though I'm the sacrifice,
You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me,
I'm all alone.
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?

Hi, I find my anxiety medication helps me very much. I take two antidepressants, one is for anxiety, and my doctor recently upped my dose and I've been feeling much better at work. I take another to help sleep at night. I'd be in trouble if not for my meds. Good luck, and welcome!

I suffer from anxiety and depression. I have been on meds for years and in therapy for years. It is a difficult decision to make since there are side effects with meds. IF you can bear the way you feel and work it out with just therapy that is fine. I just couldn't even benefit from therapy because I was so anxious that I couldn't concentrate on the sessions.

After going on meds, after a few rough weeks, I started to feel better and was able to understand myself and the therapist better. If you are ok without meds, don't start. But if you think you need them, don't suffer. A diabetic needs insulin needles everyday, some anxiety ridden and depressed people also need meds every day.

Good luck!

I wish I never touched the stuff. Now I am addicted to benzodiazapenes for the rest of my life which I am told are harder to get off than heroin.

I recently stopped taking 2 of my meds on my own because I couldn't stand being a zombie all day - Xanax and Risperdal, but had to take in an emergency last night. That's what I keep them for.

Anti-depressants make you FAT. I HATE ALL OF THEM. They also take away your sex drive completely even on your own so forget about ever enjoying sex again in any manner unless the antidepressant is Wellbutrin, then you'll just have to write more posts in the anxiety forum.

When they put me on Wellbutrin my anxiety got so bad I almost ended up in the hospital (Psych! - BAD!)

All the doctors push drugs. Sometimes they're needed for EMERGENCIES, but IMO that's it.

I AM NOT TELLING ANYONE TO CHANGE OR STOP THEIR MEDICATION. IT WORKS FOR SOME PEOPLE. IT JUST REALLY DESTROYED MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!

Hi Cindy

Im sorry you have such a hard time taking medications. Some meds dont mess up your sex drive and some do. I hated wellbutrin, years ago before I took prozac, they tried that with me. Very bad for me too.

As far as alprazalone ER , it is one of the least addicting

benzo's. You can only take 1 pill a day and its very long acting in a minimal dose spread through 24 hr period. It helps so you dont have to many ups and downs with anxiety. Right now Im down, very sad and down. Need a friend bad

sorry patty, we are all friends here
Stand up for what you believe...
I'm no doctor, not even in the health field:) But I have had many ups and downs with depression and panic attacks. If I can help others with my personal experiences I will. I have been on many different meds, but I think I have finally found the right combo! There is a light at the end of the tunnel...

Hi Michmom, what's up? Are you still feeling pretty good? I am bored and don't have many friends in real life. I really like just talking back and forth to others in these forums because it really helps me with my own anxiety and I can feel a connection and kinship with other people who are struggling just as I am.

It is my only link to other real people for weeks on end sometimes. I do see my PCP and psychologist but I have no real bond with them. They are just trying to help me from a purely medical POV and I don't see them often. Hope your weekend is going well and life continues to treat you kind.
