There are labels for the different kinds of ED's but it seems like the "experts" can't agree on how to label them, from what I can tell. Does anyone have a link to some kind of standardized terminology for the different disorders? I know that if you don't fall into a specific category, they call it "Eating Disorder Non-Specified."

yea. I guess. it may just be the perfectionist in me needing to know exactly where i fit in. Can anyone else relate to that? the need to have everything in its proper place?

i restrict, and throw up when i eat, my bmi is lower end of normal, healthy. i have my period ( or last time i checked Wink )so i guess im EDNOS...hmmm

i guess part of me really wished that i fit into a nice neat and tidy label, like "hi i'm Tru, and im Anorexic", or "I'm tru, and i'm Bulimic" ...there is so much grey area with EDnos... i don't know... but if that is what i am...it is what i am...and i'm not going to be able to change that...only the behaviors i have, for the better i mean..(recovery)

I think that the APA really needs to change their definition of anorexia, because a lot of women have a lower BMI and restrict, but haven't lost their periods or don't weigh "little enough". I think it really puts a lot of women down when they already feel horribly about themselves. I know several people, myself included, that didn't fit into a nice neat category just because we were missing one symptom....it's just dumb, if you ask me.

To me, it sounds like purging type anorexia, but a psychologist would probably diagnose ED-NOS because you're missing one or two symptoms of full-blown anorexia.

oh god that is horrible!!

i'm so sorry that that happened! they should say that you are a recovering anorexic, not that you have a different diagnosis!! that is rediculouse

I heard that you can write to the APA and tell them what you think of their diagnosing system.

Oh really?! I might just do that, hehe! I was on my way to my MSW before I had to take a medical leave, so maybe I can talk about how clients feel about it.

Thanks for the info, Julie!
