Hi everyone,

I just came over from the fibro group which I have been diagnosed with. I have also tested positive for Ankylosing Spondylitis. My X-Rays do not show any fusion of bone or muscle, only a few spurs. Has anyone carried this gene for a long time before any sign of the disease shows up on x-ray? The weird thing is that I have a lot of the symptoms like low back pain, hips, knees and ankles. When I get out of a car I am stiff and in a lot of pain. I look like a 90 year old woman.

My Rhumatologist thinks this could be a false positive test. Any comments?

Sue

Hi, I'm new to this form. I noticed your post about looking like a 90 year old getting out of your car. Don't feel bad I feel the same way. I say all time "I'm 36 and I feel like I'm 80". Be thankful you have no fusion. I found out when I was 15 that my lower back fused. Their are some people that carry the gene for years an have no symptoms. Some people may not have symptoms till they are in there 50's or later. Thats the funny thing with autoimmune diorders. Sometimes truma to the boby will start it. For example a car accident or maybe a virus. Its sounds like you have classic AS to me, heel, ankle pain, lower pain. As far as a false pos I found out that peolpe are most likely to get a false neg. The lab test is tricky you only have a short time to test for the gene. Thats why there a so many false neg. I hope I helped, sorry for rambling on. Good luck wendy

Hey Irish, thanks for the reply. I agree with you about the diagnosis. I feel that they tested me in the early stages of AS. Fibromyalgea and AS symptoms are much the same, for this reason my Rhumatologist wants to see me every 6 mo. He said that a lot of patients will be fine on one visit and the next one shows the infusion all the way up the spine. I was also told that AS usually dies out after 15 years, if this is true than you should almost be done with this disease? It is always good to keep the faith and hope.

Welcome to this website. You will find some really great people on this forum. Good luck to you too!

Sue

probably NOT false positive. gene is either there or not, period. I have had the gene forever and they still say I don't display symptoms BUT i am stiff out of car just like you also out of bed & up from chair. My general range of motion is much worse than 5 years ago (am only 43). Look up AS on internet on WebMD & Mayo very good info. I got ahold of my med records and while doc said "no visible signs on x-ray" report said there was. Doc full of sh*t.
