I have no idea what TYPE of anemia I have but I am a gastric bypass survivor. I say "survivor" because that surgery although it saved my life, has caused a myriad of other health problems.

I have had a blood count as low as "7" when it was tested. I take the supplements and slowly my levels creep up...To maybe a 12 after a couple of months. I then go back in to the Dr. because I just can't move to function normally.. only to find that my levels are back down to a "9". Normal levels I understand are at around a 13. Supposedly this is the number of pints of blood in your body.

I just had a colonoscopy due to my blood count being so low..this was to rule out cancer or any other problem like bleeding that I might not have known about. The doc says if I'm not bleeding out then he has to assume that this is a problem with absorption (which I understand a lot of gastric bypass survivors have).

What else can I do to get this blood count "UP" and keep it "UP". This roller coaster is stealing my time and my life. I eat a lot of meat (beef) and chicken too..I like green veggies...

I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome so I stay in bed a lot..as my kids will allow. I have a small child and he naps each day after lunch and late in the evening...I lay him down for a nap and lay beside him for a couple of hours..

At this point, I have to hire someone to come in and clean my home. I MAY have enough energy to cook a couple times a week.... Has anyone found a magic food or supplement that helps? What do you do if you have a malabsorbtion problem????

My doctor hasn't addressed anything with me other than prescribing an iron and b vitamin supplement.

Ermm

That's my delima...I think I just need to find a Dr. that is more comprehensive.

Hi Tara

I haven't had the surgery but my friend did a few years ago. She has lost over 200 lbs. She looks great but has many health issues from it.

Her age at surgery was 52. Now she is 55.

I don't know if it was from such fast and alot of weight loss or her age but she has so much loose skin. I know she is wanting to have surgery to remove the excess. You can't tell it in her clothes...she looks very nice.

How long has it been since yours? How old were you? How much did you lose?

My friend has the malabsorbtion problems. She takes a prescription Vit B12 shot monthly and prescribed iron. She also takes Women's Multi Vitamins. At one time she had to take something to try and help her absorb nutrients. I can't remember what that was.

She has dump syndrome but not as bad as the first 2 years.I know her hair is thinning but it still looks good.

I do not mean to upset you or cause any fear but she has aquired numerous health issues. One she has is gout. It was caused from the surgery.

And she has a hard time eating meat. Which has caused her to be protein deficient.

Let me know how you are doing dear. Try to get as much info as you can to be able to absord your nutrients. Hugs

Hi there Bits!

I'm 40 now and had my surgery in Feb. 2000. I lost 110 lbs. as of 8 months out when I found out I WAS PREGNANT for the first time. My weight loss pretty much stopped at that point and I have been maintaining since.

I really haven't tried to "diet" at all because I've been concentrating on getting "enough" of the good stuff. I have noticed though, if I tweak a few things like cut out so many sodas and drink tea instead, the weight starts to come off...

I have 3 little boys now...I was told just a year before I got pregnant that I would probably NEVER conceive..due to the PCOS I was not ovulating...

I had a lot of problems before the surgery that have gotten a LOT better........but again I traded them for other problems..I'm still in the process of being diagnosed for a lot of symptoms I have..

I just recently found out that I have fibromyalgia and possibly Chronic fatigue...So many of my symptoms fit with my PCOS and back problems and anemia etc....its been hard to find the underlying cause of it all..

I hope your friend continues to do well... with her endeavors to be healthier.

Now I'm going to bed LOL....it's MIDNIGHT here in GEORGIA!
