Hi everyone.

For years I have had issues with drinking to much. I do not depend on alcohol to get through my day but I just don't understand why i don't know when to stop drinking when I've had to much.

I am Bipolar and Codepent. I'm currently on meds which i have been taking for the last two years to regulate my moods and depression. I still find myself making the same self destruction decisions when I drink even now medicated.

I don't understand. When i drink I get very hyper and don't know when to stop sometimes.. I want to understand because it affects my daily life.

Is it because i'm bipolar??

Hi. I used to be so happy and hyper when I drank then out of nowhere I'm throwing punches at my poor boyfriend. I'm at 90 days of not drinking and now no more rage and anger. If your manic and depression aren't big issues with drinking then that's crazy. Just try to be honest with yourself. Meds do work.

Thanks for the replies.I agree the meds do help me and I am aware the meds will effect me if I drink on them. I guess I am confused with myself. I know I act like a fool when I drink, is it due to not knowing how to control myself, is it the mixture of the meds in my system or is it really a alcohol diagnosis problem.. And maybe your right I just am afraid to be honest with myself.???

lifetime, it isn't a matter of not knowing how to control yourself, haven't personally met a alcoholic/drunk that can, the mixture of alcohol and your medications can make things even worse,

Only you can make the determination of whether you are a alcoholic or not, personally I am, although I was always a happy drunk, alcoholic or not, didn't matter, alcohol affected my life, career, every part. Like you I too am bipolar, but I am also sober, and i know that it allows the medications to work like they should, have you read the little patient information sheets that come with your meds? or researched them online? if you do, you will find that they do not mix with alcohol.

Please be honest with yourself, are you a alcoholic? if you believe that you are, and you've already said that drinking causes you problems, which is a key to knowing you are one, get into a meeting and get help stopping.

Prior to my diagnosis of bipolar, I had to self commit to a rehab center to stop and get my life turned around, I had been drinking for so long and at such a early age, that I knew no other way of living.. not only did they help me stop, they also taught me how to live without alcohol in my life.

Jim gave you great sources of information.. look over them, join up with the dual diagnosis group, it's for those of us with the dual diagnosis of alcoholism and bipolar.. we face a double challenge. We also have bipolar groups here on the site, both for the bipolar 1 and the bipolar 2, I am a 2 personally..

Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.. you can do this.. I have..
