Years ago I would stay sober for a little while and then relapse. No excuses....I could be feeling great and then pick up a drink and be off to the races again.

...I relate...

...I could always stay sober for long periods of time...My longest stretch was 9 years...I did the revolving door program for years...Like you said when things were going good...you would pick up...Thats the hard part for me ...when I decided to drink...Nothing can stop me...I never had a slip...It was always a conscience decission...

Yes, when things started getting better I would pick up, and quickly reach a new low and collect another "yet" or two.

I don't want to do that anymore.

To pick up has alway been a choice. We find ways to make it easy. Start a fight with the wife or family member etc. the gift of aa is a gift from god the first time. We feel wonderful and have that pink cloud. The only problem is live gets in the way. We sometimes feel like we didn't do enough to earn our Soberity . Like we must still pay for it. Soberity is a gift giving freely to all that request it. The is the part where we grow up and act like adults and not so much as child like. a slp is just research for a decision we need to make. The sooner the better for all concerned.

Previous discussions I participated in:
Playing cards
Feeling overwhelmed
Drugs

We all know it is a decision and yet it is amazing how we can split our minds and get talked in to doing it by our own subconscious. Have any of you ever caught yourself in the rationalization of stopping by the liquor store on the way home? It is a scary moment when you look back on the thought process that took you to that moment and you weren't even aware it was going on. It like we dissociate or something.

I was at a party the other day and a guy poured a pitcher of beer. It had a real nice head and was golden in color and ice cold. I had to leave the party.

I now realize that a relapse starts long before the first drink. I would hear that but not know what it meant, but now I know. It starts with some crazy rationalizing and justifying, then putting myself in a place I should not have been in the first place.

I had a crazy thought. I am planning a trip to Texas and started thinking about drinking in Texas. I plan on doing some snake hunting. I don't kill them...I just mess with them for awhile and let them go. So here is the crazy part. I was going to start drinking before I went to build up my tolerance to a hing level so I would be sober enough to go play with the rattlers. Ughh! So I cancelled my trip and will go when I get my head on straight.
