Hi Moonwatcher - I can't believe I just found this post you started back on June 29th! There aren't enough words (or exclamation points) to thank you for taking the time to write this and it being so well articulated.

Dennis's WOW (the big bold WOW) was perfect! And I echo everyone's response. I'm definitely printing this out and sharing it with folks I know. Even my Hep Doc to see if you get an A++++++++++++++ (Smile). Seriously she likes to read these kind of things and has even checked out MDJ.

@ Dennis - thank you for pinning this - I might have missed it if you hadn't. Everyone in every group that involves alcohol should read this. I'll be sure to give the folks in the Alcoholism Group a heads up!

Hope you are doing well Moonwatcher!

I'm having the same problem seeing new posts here, the notifications are not showing up. Someone might want to look into that.

Hey virginian777!

Welcome to the group! We are a group of recovering alcoholics, with varying amounts of time of sobriety, who have consumed enough alcohol to have caused some degree of liver damage but have not yet developed full blown cirrhosis. Our members also include caregivers to people with ALD as well as ME! I am a 6 year sober recovering alcoholic who has traveled the path from severe alcohol abuse, initial recovery and then plunging into full blown, decompensated cirrhosis. I received a life-saving liver transplant in July of 2008. I am now a group leader for this group, the MDJunction Cirrhosis Support Group and the MDJunction Organ Transplants Support Group.

We do NOT deal with active addiction issues! If a member of this group is still struggling with addiction recovery issues we urge them to get help to resolve those issues in either the MDJunction Alcoholism Support Group or in an offline (in person) group such as Alcoholic Anonymous or SMART Recovery.

To see some posts about how this group works, "click" the Forums tab towards the top of this page and then go to the Introductions & Personal Stories forum where you will see other member's self-introductions and some posts that describe our guidelines and formal mission statement.

You can click on the member's name to the left of a post to visit that member's "home page" where there may be some additional background information. Sometimes members use the "Diary" feature of MDJunction to store information that may be helpful to other members or just to keep track of their own progress/frustrations. All diaries are public and can be read by anyone else on MDJunction thru your home page (tho there has been talk about adding a function to the Diary feature to make individual diary entries private.

Hopefully you will feel free to post your questions, comments or just related things that you need to vent! There is no limit to how much you type into your posts (as you see by this post! SmileLaughing ) All we ask is that you stay on topic withing a particular topic or start a new discussion and follow our group guidelines.

Again, welcome to the group! If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a Personal Message (PM) or respond to this post.

very interesting - so, if inflammation actually goes up after abstaining from alcohol for a period does that necessarily mean the AST/ALT stay high as well? most posts i've seen suggest 2 - 3 months post alcohol the levels are down and can in fact present as normal. i'm now 3 weeks post any alcohol and feeling great - 2 hour run in the mountains yesterday, splitting and stacking wood today, two less than 2 weeks for blood pressure to return to normal. my ALT/AST (granted 5 days post a very hard 100 mile run) were 110/73 respectively (also the blood was taken 10 minutes after and intramuscular injection (booster shot). so - why does my Dr. want to re-test 5 - 6 weeks out if it takes 3 months or longer for these to go down? my ALT/AST ratio was less than 1 - does that mean anything. Moon - when your labs stabilized what was your ratio?
