PTSD is an anxiety disorder that has been around since the beginning of mankind. Its symptoms were recognized and mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. It is the result of being exposed to an event or events that are so severe and traumatizing that they basically overload the mind. If you are young under the age of 20 it can physically change the brain permanently.

PTSD symptoms are frequently chronic and can be delayed for many years before overcoming the victim. Symptoms include intrusive thoughts, racing thoughts, paranoia, agoraphobia, flashbacks, irritability, severe nightmares, night sweats, depression and other anxiety disorder.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder sometimes incorrectly referred to by the media as post traumatic syndrome, can be caused or triggered by witnessing or being involved any number trauma related events. These include combat, car accidents, domestic battery, rape, assault, industrial accidents, murder, imprisonment and personal injury. The response to these events is entirely personal. Events that have no effect on others or even events that you have witnessed previously may not have any effect on you in terms of PTSD.

Individuals suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder frequently develop additional mental disorders as a result of their PTSD. These include depression, substance abuse, alcoholism, sleep disorders, suicide, agoraphobia, GAD and panic disorder. In addition physical medical problems also increase and can include cardiac, dental, intestinal, and digestive diseases. Some physicians feel it also increases the risk of cancer.

Gosh Kitten!! I can honestly say my PTSD did not cause my agor or did it?

Hmmmm? I just stopped and thought about it and the ones that caused my PTSD are the ones I'm hidding from so it sort of caused it but becoming agor was my decision I believe.

I've always all my life wanted nothing more than to stay home(alone)and not be bothered by anyone.

The sad part was at 18 after leaving home I did live alone but had to leave to go to work and that was so hard on many levels.

Many people never knew where I lived (my choice)so I felt safe with my german shepherd dog and what ever cats decided to stay.

My issues now are that too many people know where I am and abuse my boundary rules.

As long as everyone stays away I can keep my PTSD under control but if any of them cross that path then they have to deal with the rage they caused me all my life.

Being Agor is almost as bad as the last job I had!!!
I really have to work at it 24/7 and don't get paid either.

I like the way that Erin put it, "Agoraphobic tendencies". I'm not really sure what came first the Agor or the PTSD, maybe I will never know...it's just an interesting thought.

Smile

I'll try to find more articles about it.

I defintely know that my PTSD came before my Agor......but I think part of what helped the Agor to not come until I was out of high school was that I did have a highly structred routine until then......so that kinda held me up. Ironically my bus phobia didn't start until after a year after I left high school when I was doing a class at a local community college that I had to take a bus to. But once I got the bus anxiety, my Agor tendencies hit full force. It only took that one thread that got tugged to unravel the whole sweater, lol.

I like the "thread getting tugged" metaphor Erin. I sorta feel the same way. I think my PTSD caused my "agor tendencies". I feel like I conquered all the traumatic events in my childhood and late teens pretty well... until one specific thing happened around age 19 that triggered my panic and it was a downward spiral from that point. I fought my way back and got back to "normal" but it seems it doesn't take much to push me right back down. So it's a vicious cycle....

I agree Connie, it seems like an endless cycle. The more that we go around the more guilt and shame that we feel.

It took such a long time for me to accept that the 'Agor' wasn't my main issue but more of a bad coping skill that became a habit...ingrained into my response system.

In addition to the 'avoidance' symptoms that sufferers of PTSD experience, there are a great number of physical and interpersonal symptoms that we suffer and overlap with the diagnosed Agoraphobia.

There are many consequences that can occur from the result of unresolved trauma. Among physical consequences are:

• Gastro-intestinal disturbance

• Auto-immune dysfunctions

• Heart disease

• Hypertension/High blood pressure

• Chronic Pain, i.e., Lower Back, Fibromyalgia, Headaches

Many interpersonal consequences can also arise from unresolved trauma that can create difficulty in relationships and parenting. The individual may find it especially hard to be open, honest and trusting. This may manifest as:

• Defensiveness, which can be expressed by becoming irritable, overly emotional or withdrawn

• Avoidance of situations

• Hypersensitivity to criticisms or slights

• Needing to feel in control

• Anxiety about the safety of children

Here are two tests. One for PTSD and one for Agoraphobia. Take it and compare.

I was diagnosed with PTSD in 1996 and think it contributes a lot to my agoraphobia.

I'm glad that you have joined us. It certainly complicates matters having both.
