Most all of us take a benzo or anxiety med, like xanax, clonazepam or valium. the script always says 2 or 3 times daily, as needed! What is your definition of "as needed"? Take it before a trigger or if you feel anxiety creeping up. Maybe take it on a regular time frame to cover all the bases. What's your take on "as needed"?

My take? I take it when I need it. I don't take it every day but when I do, sometimes I take my valium before I know I am going out into a potentially anxious situation or when I start to feel the pangs of it sneaking up. If I wait until a full blown panic attack, the valium does nothing. That is usually when I just throw up and be done with it. THEN the valium can work. I can't take Xanax. A 1/4mg knocks my butt out. Can't function when I am unconscious.

As needed to me means as needed. I am lucky that I don't feel the urge to abuse them. That is a huge feat for me. Wink

Blessings, strength and courage to all.

Can't take benzos because the job....although right before I saw my Pdoc the last time I went to the ER they gave me 10 ativan when they finaly figured out what the hell was going on only took about a year!

Anyways so I did take some of the Ativan and I took it as I started to feel the symptoms and knew panic was coming. Still have 2 left that sit in the bottle just in case.

Take as needed for me on my Xanax is absolute last line of defense. I can't stand how it makes me feel and then it knocks me out for several hours. I have 1 mg tablets that I can take up to three times daily, was prescribed 90 tabs 6 months ago, still have 75 or so.

I think "as needed" is the docs way of saying "shit if I know" Smile

My script used to read take one tablet ever six hours as needed. I never needed that so eventually it got down to one a day. That clearly wasn't enough so. I am back to 90 tablets a month of 1mg of xanax. When I am freaking out and manic 1mg doesn't touch it. It doesn't even make me tired anymore. I used to take it for sleep, now trazodone has been added, still no relief, Ahhhhhh!!!!

As needed for me was taking them regularly. For me, once I was on them I would panic if I skipped a dose. That's the biggest problem with benzos, if your body gets used to them it can cause you to panic if you don't keep taking them. Still, I wish I was still on them. What can I say, they work.

Doctors here really hate prescribing benzodrines because of the potential addiction risk..so I have to do without them.I kind of support the idea but also think sometimes it would be nice to be able to zone out when im feeling really jittery.

As it it all I get are my antidepresants...Sad

I am lucky. My prescription says nothing about any needs LOL. I used to take my clonazepam 3 times a day and now it is down to 2 times. I take less than prescribed but always 2 times per day. I never skip. I prefer to not disturb that which is working...
