About a week ago I started having flushing, different times of day, and it seems to be getting worse. My face looks almost sunburned, and of course I feel warm all over, but my face is HOT.

My heartrate has also gone back up, but I'm not sure if this is related or not.

I see my internist Tuesday, but I wondered if any of you have had flushing. I called the shrink, because the only new meds are the ones they gave me, and I've been on them about 4 weeks...so enough time for them to build up good and cause problems. He's convinced it's not the psych meds, but it might be the prednisone.

Now, I'm getting a little tired of every doc blaming everything on pred. I've been on it for 11 months now. But I'm open to anything at this point. Anyone?

Thanks,

Cynthia - who looks very embarrassed at the moment.

I used to get very red in the face when I was cortisol low, not so much anymore unless I really need to stress dose. But I also started the synthroid a while back so not so sure it wasn't possibly thyroid-related, or a combination of the two. My best gut thinking is that it was an adrenalin response brought on by cortisol low.

I don't think that after 11 months of pred the pred could be causing this, but I'm not a doctor. I do think that whenever I've gone on a new med and I get a side effect it is more likely to be related to (a) the new med - duh! or (b) an interaction of the new med with other meds I'm on. Or could be (c) totally unrelated to either and some other hypoallergen got into the mix.

Isn't life grand?

I'm glad to share my experience, but I am not a doctor and you should always consult your own physician.

I'm hypopituitary (SAI and hypothyroid) caused by a pituitary cyst. Taking 7.5 mg prednisone and 75 mcg synthroid daily.

Considering a medication side effect had us thinking I had MS or Parkinson's, yeah, life is TOTALLY fabulous on all these meds! LOL

You know, I've been hearing so much from docs about being on such a high dose of pred, it never occured to me it could be low cortisol. It's happening in the late afternoons/evenings, though, which would make sense for that. I take all my pred in the morning at the same time.

Hmmmmm...good food for thought. I have several more doc appointments coming up, so I'll have some to run it by before I get to the endo.

Thank you!

I stayed flushed for HOURS last night. My face was super-red, but I am very fair-skinned, so I don't know if that makes it seem worse or not. But it took about two hours before it started getting better, but it was still slightly there about four hours later.

That cannot be normal. I will mention to the docs that several of you get it when you are low, although I doubt they will buy that with my dose. Sad

I flush at the oddest times. When I mentioned it to the doc she said, "Well, you're very fair skinned, maybe your blood pressure went up a little (it was typically 90/60 back then). Sometimes, I flush so badly I look almost purple, and people comment, "Do you have high blood pressure?"

The weird thing is, now that it's been high if I take more than 5mg HC, I don't flush as often.

I also noticed that I can't take HC 2 days in a row or I get awful headaches! I check my BP (when I'm on the HC and it's elevated)

After my surgery I'm going to get down to this w/my new doc. Right now no one wants to change anything until after.

I've taken my bp and heartrate multiple times. The heartrate is high, but the bp is not. And the heart is high all the time it seems, not just when I'm flushing.

It's so weird, because all I can think about is toilets having this discussion!

I hate this crap. I'm a little bit tired of medication side effects.

Okay silly question time. (And not a joke about flushing or tshirts...)

You all know the flushing mechanism right? (A hot hypothalamus) ie that gland thinks your body temperature is too high and tries to bring it down. Either your drug is raising your metabolic temperature or is affecting the gland hot/cold calibration point. (ie the thermostat is out of adjustment)

What happens if you cool your head or squirt something cool up your nasal cavity. (Have you picked yourself off the floor laughing yet?) DO NOT BE STUPID HERE!

Seriously if you have clear sinuses the pituitary kind of protrudes down into the top of it and I wonder if simple cooling would help the flushes. Of course its deep inside at almost the centre of your skull so applying an ice cube is likely dangerous and any external cooling would be pretty well negated by blood flowing, I do however have to ask. I mean they use underarm icepacks in hospitals for very bad fevers. Maybe breathing cool air (like through a CPAP nose mask) would be an answer, or more importantly don't breathe in hot air!

Okay give it your best shot! (Think I'll store my saline spray in the fridge...)

Bob (Who only flushes when bike riding)
