Hello,

My son is now almost 16 years old. He was diagnosed at the age of 3 1/2 years old. I always thought he was hyper because I was a single mom, divorced while I was about 5 month pregnant as my husband didn't want children.

When I was told by the only Doctor he ever seen before, he showed signs of ADHD at the age of three, I thought she was crazy and then I never I even know what is ADHD.

I had him seen by Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Therapists, etc...they all said the same......before me telling them.........ADHD.

I then went to the Psychiatrist/Therapist and was medicated with Adderall 1/2 of one of the lowest amount, back in the late 90's.

He is now 15 years old, on Intuniv and Vyvanse. He is now a teenager and he isn't as hyper, but he has issues in school, even though he has a IEP since 3rd Grade (after 3 years getting the IEP Approved) but when he doesn't want to do something, he crosses his hands and refuses to do anything in any of his classes. I then get an email and my Ex Husband (The one that didn't want children and asked me for a divorce when I was about five months pregnant.) What punishment am I doing? Do I really need to tell him as he doesn't even follow my rules at his home every other weekend (Four days a month).

My son was punished, as a 15 year old should be punished.......hard labor. I had him putting Christmas lights out, then putting them down. Cleaning the yard front and back yard, and keep up on his regular chores. His grades need to be above a C, if lower, than we will talk, but this year has been blessed (Knock on wood)

For all Parents with ADHD BOYS how do you punish your sons or get them to do something when they don't? My son isn't innocent and does not do all his chores every day, and I do want him to do better in school and with his father, but I don't know what to do. He can't stand his father. I do not tell his Dad or anyone else as this is between me and him. I can tell when he lies and tells the truth, as most parents can do when they get older. I know my parents knew, when I was lying, I thought they psychic. I learned from them when I had my son and I learned off the best, lol! My son has some of my own habits, lol!

What is some things your child does when they lie and if you catch them, what kind of punishment do you give out to them?

I hope to learn more and to help others dealing wtih over 11 years of ideas and what I learned and/or taught about my child with ADHD.

(((Hugs)))

Hope

Hello NJHOPE,

I also have a son that is ADHD had been since he was int he first grade. He has also given me some problems and has been on meds since day one, my son mainly only gave me problems when he was in shcool but was fine at home my son has been on every med you can think of his main problem was that he was always down on himself saying that he was dumb and that he couldn't do anything..I was always called up school everyday for something that he had done did..so one day a teacher called me trying to figure out a way to calm him down when he got into his rages so she took him to shoot around in the gym one day and found out that this calmed him down immediately..Since then my son is on the basketball team he is 17 a senior in high school and ball is his passion he is the number one player on his team and has had many colleges looking at him. the only problem my son still has to work on is he is a very outspoken person that will be his only down fall I've always told my kids that they could do anything if they put their minds to it..the day he went to high school was the day he came to me and said mom i hate that medicine it makes me sleepy and i don't want to eat i sat him down and told him that the only way he could get off meds was that he had to change his ways ever since then he has been off meds its been going on four years..i remember the nights of hard crying i did my mom always told me that he wouldn't put no more on us than we can handle i believe her and i believe GOD can change anything i give him all my praises...i wish you and your son the best and God bless you both..Smile This is him today...
