hello everyone! i have asked my reg dr and my endo about the risks of taking steroids. they both told me that if you are replacing what your body doesn't have then you will be ok, it won't cause bad effects. but if your dose is higher than normal dose you risk the bad stuff. my endo told me i was safe to do higher dose about 4x year if i was sick. he says normal dose is 20 mg of Hydrocortisone in am and 10 me in pm. what dose do all of you take??

Well, my normal dose of Hydrocortisone is 20mg in the morning and 5 mg at night. I found that if I took my night time dose too late....say around 8-10pm, (usually because I would forget or was away from home) then I was too wired up to go to sleep. So I now take my PM dose at 5-6pm. I did 'experiment' one time for a week and took '25mg' in the morning. Wow...it was great!

I was 'awake' all day and had so much more energy, I actually was able to get some housework chores done. My joints were more flexible and were not sore, and I just felt GOOD all over! But... then when I fessed up to my doctor, I got "The Look" and the 'Wagging Finger' in my face. The doc told me I could take an extra 5mg's if I had something going on that evening...ya know, a concert or something to where I would be out and about and interrupting my usual calm nighttime routine. BUT..don't do that all the time. I also take extra hydrocortisone if I am going on vacation...ya know the stress of flying and all! Herro, I'm going to research more on 'steroids'...specifically Hydrocortisone and their long term use. I've always been told that there are bad side effects, so now I'm confused. When I was diagnosed with Degen Disk Disease, the ortho surgeon, who happens to be the 3rd best in the USA, asked if I could 'Stop taking the steroids' and you know my answer to that one. Even my eye doctor asked if I could stop taking them, as it can be responsible for the cataracts in my eyes! Nighty Night

hey tuffy, let me know what you dig up.sometimes i trust drs too much. but they all keep saying that if you are just replacing what you body doesn't produce then you won't have bad side effects. but..if you go over that dose you're in trouble. i have wondered if it is all that harmless. they have us take all these meds, seems like one leads to another...you have to take more meds cuz of side effects. or they decide yrs later that maybe it wasn't really that good for you. like, oops! sorry, we screwed up your body! and i don't think they have really gotten the hydro meds all figured out yet. ok, i will stop rambling again....
