but now he has been drinking 4-6 beers a day plus a little wine to help with anxiety and withdrawals. I am worried about this. Is it OK to let him do it or shall I really put my foot down ?

As long as he keeps it at that level and it keeps him from relapsing. Just make sure he doesn't start drinking more or throughout the day,
