When I was not medicated properly and adding to that self-medicating with alcohol (and perhaps too much of prescription drugs as well). I isolated and was anything but easy to be around. And "one is the loneliest number you'll ever do."

I'm opening up in A.A. and N.A. meetings when I can make them, and I see where it does nobody any good to not engage and share with others, and particularily with those who have "been there, done that" with regard to addiction issues. ...Read More

Depression 101A

Jan 09 2013
When I was feeling lousy after a relationship breakup, a therapist I saw told me to take a walk!  I think with depression, something is involved they call endorphins - and exercise seems to increase their production.

I've heard about Sam-E (?) and have no idea about it, but I have found with more exercise (bicycling, swimming, dancing), I get to feeling mor...

Bumper Sticker - "Honk if you take lithium."

Dec 18 2012
Your question is one that many, many people wonder about!  Part of the dilemma is learning that the labeling may be more a problem than the problem itself!

If I feel sad, psychiatrically I can diagnose it as "depression."
If I feel excited, I could diagnose myself as "manic."

When I was not medicated properly and used alcohol, things got sorta crazy.

I'm opening up in A.A. and had the opportunity to vent my frustrations to my real "family."

I went to Bank of America and asked to know the reason why they were refusing to reopen my account.  The manager said that I would have to talk to the administrative office.  I to...

Catch 22

Dec 13 2012

For two days I have been talking with Suicide Prevention Services.  What a relief to talk to another person who had been in the Army and was bipolar as well.

Funny, but I tried to call 4-1-1 on my cell and I did not have enough money in the account to qualify to use the service.  So I called 9-1-1 and asked them if they had the number of a crisis line!

The police pe...

Big Book - its value and Finding a Sponsor

Dec 06 2012
The Big Book tells stories about our alcohol adventure(s) and how it has affected our lives.  The heat part is that the "meat and potatoes" is the thinking and writing of the authors, and the rest are stories that seem like some of them are written about ME.  I think attending and listening to people may suggest a sponsor (the secretary asks for people who are willing to s...

Encouraging Words to a Partner Who is Having a Rough Go of it.

Dec 01 2012
Now we have many more options than just lithium (one of the first).  The fact that her meds are seeming to work well now is a good sign, a wonderful sign.  It is so hard on you, as her partner, to hang in with her throughout the period of adjustment.  There is a National Organization called the www.dbsalliance.org that has a list of support groups (for both clients and families...

Note to Sanart (sp?)

Nov 29 2012
My dx is also BP 1, and since 1992 I was on a bunch of medications that, in my opinion, caused me to be more "bipolar" than the unmedicated state.  I think my philosophy at this pointis to use the least medication to do with the "disorder" than is necessary is critical (has been for me).

Further, I think people like you and talking to each o...

Relationship Stuff

Hi,

Money seems to give the attractive quality of power, and I think that can be sad, in a way.  I've gone through a time when I've had little or no money, or when I have had money, I've been foolish.

Part of my problem is bipolar disorder, as you may know, and along with that I have also abused alcohol.  I've att...

Last night a dear friend passed away some 400 miles away from here.  I have been dealing with the feelings, and last night I visualized her and did the Serenity Prayer.  I've been quiet all day, not wanting to initiate a pity party, but I did attend 3 meetings.  I'm just holding it in and in my own way (I'm kind of abandoned and homeless right now)...and I think if I can...

Another Note to a Buddy

And that's how it worked for me, too...I didn't get "drunk" in the black-out sense of that, but it did distort my judgment.  And when I've had some to drink, I cross overthat boundary line between "being assertive" and "being aggressive."  Now, I don't know quite how it works for you - perhaps you are one of the fortunate few who can jus...

Howdy,

My friend, Jimbo, saved my ass from getting ready to do my own final exit...shouted at me to get to a meeting.  And then he went on his own way and would buyvodka, one after the other.  He doesn't take Seroquel...but he acknowledged he needs some psychiatric help but can not afford it, or consider alternatives.  I love the guy but I feel he...

Note to person uncertain about whether s/he is bp

Aug 19 2012

may want to do a little homework on your own about your diagnosis.  There are online tests you can take that help you discover whether you have bipolar disorder.  Try http://www.healthyplace.com as well as http://www.dbsalliance.org.

You may be able to look at the results and see whether what you are experiencing falls under the category of "bipolar disorder."

Pdocs in the UK, vs. U.S. vs. Anywhere

Aug 16 2012

Each country is different, so it's hard for someone like me (in the U.S.) to venture an opinion about a doctor there in the U.K.

We do have sites available that might be of interest to you:  This one (I think is the best), http://www.dbsalliance.org; http://www.healthyplace.org; and Dr-Bob.org (check with your search engine).

Response to Mark'a Encouraging Prayer

Aug 14 2012
Maybe it was your prayer power that got me through this morning.  It was incredible, took a fall on the concrete, bags went everywhere, and I hooked them together using the old Rube Goldbergmethod (with a hope and a prayer).  Money is tight, my cell is disconnected owing to non-payment, and I have a hard time believing how it is down here in Chinatown.  I am typing this from th...

Your song is multi-faceted, but then isn't that part and parcel of who we are as bipolars?  I had a discussion with one fellow about John Denver, in that while he was an acknowledged loverof liquor (his biography indicates he got 3 DUI's, one after the other), I've wondered if he didn't have a mood component too.  His lyrics that point to a peak experience he had (bo...

Jul 22 2012
There is no prescribed time for mourning the loss of a loved one.  For some of us (myself include), I go into a state of emotional shock and continue to function, but eventually it catches upwith me and, well, when it does it happens for me at the darndest times.  I even walled up my grieving for my brother, mother and father.  I put on an act and get through the funerals and p...

Note to a Partner to a Guy in Distress

The thought occurs to me that his employer may have an employee assistance program that will help him address his addiction issues.  I would imagine the temptation is there for a lot of professionals(doctors as well), because access is so easy.

To a Bipolar Mom in Distress

Jul 17 2012

Part of the problem seems to be that you have a partner who is not being much help when you most need it!

Note to Mark

Jul 16 2012

Hi Mark,

Well, it's been a great weekend here, but no "cold one" (not that I haven't considered it).  I'm in a holding pattern, spent all my money on a motel for a couple weeks, and I'm now down in Chinatown staying at a place called the Victory Mission.  (I think I reviewed it in my website http://www.streetsmartsalinas.com under "shelters."

Note to a Mom of a Heroin Addict

Jul 16 2012

Sounds like a situation where "tough love" may be what is called for.  Heroin addiction is deadly in several ways:  one, when you get some, the purity of the chemicals may be questionable(often it is "cut" with other materials to make it more profitable).  Two, in order to feed the habit, it takes money.

If you are an addict, money is something in scarce...

Note to a person with BP and fibromyalgia

Jul 15 2012
Well, it would appear you are on quite a combination of medications!  I believe Citalopram is a generic name for Celexa or Lexapro (I'm not sure which).  I took Tegretol (carbazapene) back in the 1980's - and I withdrew from it too abruptly and it made for a hell of an experience.

Tegretol and Depakote are both anti-epileptics and have been success...

To a Person with a Mom Who Has Narcolepsy

Jul 14 2012

I've had 2 sleep studies and have Medicare, and during a sleep study they attach electrodes to your head and measure you in several different ways.  It might be helpful and produce some ideaof what is going on.

Actually, I think "narcolepsy" is when a person has more trouble staying awake.  What she may be experiencing is a biproduct of her bipolar challenge (I pre...

Can Two Bipolar People Have a Relationship?

Jul 12 2012

Loving somebody with bipolar disorder is kind of like loving an athlete (sounds odd), but there are times when the bipolar athlete is at the top of his (or her) game and times when they are not.

That you love him is certainly evident.  What may be difficult to accept is the rollercoastering that bipolar mood swings seem to cause, because they are predictable...up/down...and co...

First Step

Jul 11 2012

I wrote this to a lady who was at her "wit's end" with drinking.

When your addiction is severe, withdrawal from alcohol can produce what is called the "DTs" (delerium tremors) (I think).  Dr. Silkworth treated over 40,000 alcoholics, and the treatment consists of helping them through the God-awful withdrawals.

Now that I have 6 months...

Note to the partner of a Bipolar fellow taking Prozac (and having troubles)

Jul 10 2012

A friend of mine, a clinical psychologist, recommended a book called Listening to Prozac.  I think it may prove helpful to do some research about this drug and the reported side-effects.  Prozac is a selective seatonin inhibitor (called an SSRI).  I've worked on a suicide prevention hotline service for 7 years, and one caller was in trouble with her Prozac - and it was necess...

Re posting Sobriety Milestones

Jul 10 2012
I think that's a terrific idea!  Why do we post our sobriety birthdays; in order to be an inspiration and example for others that we can do it.

My sobrietybirthday is January 3, 2012, and I now have in excess of 6 months and more clarity than I've ever had.  I know I'm assertive, but when I drink I can be one real son-of-a-(you know what...

Atypical antipsychotics have some curious side-effects, notably what is called "extrapyrimidial."  I asked the pharmacist at Walgreens to print out the side-effect profile of Seroquel, and I made a note about them; I'm really not sure what they are, but i think Astra-Zeneca does.

That class of drugs, for me (and that's all I can share about wi...

Response in the Celibacy Forum

Jul 08 2012
I think people who have healthy sex lives and have strong, healthy orgasms are healthier and they have a glow about them.  They take better care of their bodies and appearance in order to appear attractive.  Whether a person is a monk, homosexual (male or female), I think having a healthy sex drive and orgasmic release is a plus.  If it so happens one is solo, then perhaps they can...

I can't believe it.  I reported to the Monterey County Jail in order to serve 10 days (I called 9-1-1 and the judge felt it was a false call).  I was to be fined $1000 because that is what that misdemeanor costs.

Well, I went up there Monday, and the jail person told me I needed to go back to the court.  The court told me I needed to talk t...

Responding to a Victim of Child Abuse

Jun 23 2012
No, some scars seem the slowest to heal, but I think irishanel hit it right on the head, talking it through with the right people will be the way it most has a chance to heal.  My former fiance wasabused by her step-father and it left her with empty spots that were so hard for her to heal through.  She did, however, and I got an invitation to be friends with her and her husband...I'm...

Talking with Myself....

Jun 23 2012

Well, I think insofar as having a sponsor goes, when one chooses to be his own sponsor, it is not unlike the attorney who represents him (or herself), because in either case we have a "fool fora client."

I've done a lot of soul-searching in the last couple of days, and I guess more than anything else, I'm thoroughly confused.  But it seems like perhaps the bes...

Haven't Got Time for the Pain

Jun 21 2012

Pain is something that is so hard to live with, and it drives people to self-medicate (and so often with alcohol).

I was burned in a suicide attempt in 1973.  In debriding (removingthe skin), they gave me acetamine (was like LSD), and then one pain medication after the other (Percoset, Darvocet and many more) while I healed (I had skin-grafting).  The strategy was to cont...

Response to SSI Applicant Question

Jun 21 2012

It is worth it to apply, but like others have mentioned, you really do need a diagnosis from a doctor (and having tests to go along with it would help).  When you submit your application, the date of its receipt is the date your claim officially begins.

While it may take more tests and visits to a doctor in order to really ascertain that you are indeed disabled and in real need of SS...

Sponsor Woes

Jun 21 2012

I have had several sponsors since 2006.  I'm kind of weird in that I have an ego that thinks to itself, "Well, I have had substance abuse training in school.  And I have worked fora year for Beacon House as a substance abuse counselor."

Right now I have a sponsor who I see in passing only.  I am homeless, out of money, and I need to leave 15 minutes early from...

Is there a "right" sponsor?

Jun 21 2012

Shoplifting

Jun 20 2012
Shoplifting can be an expression of anger issues (at being "gipped, overcharged" and more.  If your friend can find a support group of other people who have been down the shoplifting road, that would be great.  I used to shoplift myself, even got good at it, but it always comes back to bite you on the behind...and that's what the person with the nimble fingers does not real...

Dealing with the Blues

Jun 20 2012
They term the blues of this type "Seasonal Affective Disorder) or "SAD" for short.

Light plays a big role in our moods, so getting outside in the sunshine (and don't wear sunglasses) may be helpful.  They sell a lightbox that you can purchase (I know Costco had a version for about $30) that you can look into and have it stimulate the p...

To a Mom of a Son in Denial

Jun 19 2012
He sounds like he is a rebel without a cause right now!  I went through a similar time when I was 16, hated my mom, ran away from home, hung out in pool halls and drove my mom even further intoher drinking.

My former partner, Barbara, had a daughter that went through the period of incorrigibility and she and her former husband chose to have her legally emancipa...

To "I feel fatigued alot"

Jun 19 2012
One thing I use to help me be more active is to drink coffee.  I'm "addicted" to Alcoholics Anonymous groups as well as DBSA groups, and we all drink coffee and often have sweets(like sugar).

People who backpack and ride bikes (and I'm all over the place on mine) eat energy bars (Cliff makes a great one), along with fruit juices....

Different Sex Drive Dilemma

Jun 19 2012

Medications can get in the way - I know from my own experience with Zoloft, it was one that lessened sex drive. Another that did a whammy on me was Inderal (propanolol), a Beta blocker, that is used in conjunction with lithium to address the shakes.

On the Lighter Side...a Joke!

Jun 18 2012
A psychiatrist and a proctologist go into business together (a "proctologist" is kind of the "rear admiral of medicine."

So they go to a coffeeshop and have a cup of coffee or two and sit down to figure out what they are going to put on the sign outside their new office!

After the first cup of coffee, one of them...

Bereavement and Dealing With the Blues

Jun 18 2012
I found it helpful to attend a grief support group locally, did that after my brother passed away in 1997.  Also, I had an excellent therapist to help me work through my feelings of being lostand helpless.

One day I saw Robin and he said something startling.  He said, "Let's put your depression in that chair over there, and then let's see what...

Sweetie,

I thought I told you before - I am really busy on MDJunction (I am an advocate there); you might want to visit.  Because I am busy publishi...

Rolfing

Jun 17 2012
Hi,

Yes, I have.  I got my first 10 in Orange with Bob Gilbert (also director of the YMCA), next 20 with Grant Powers (Certified Advanced Rolfer), and then in Montereywith Dick Stratman, (Advanced Rolfer, too).

I took courses with Dick and just a few other practitioners in how to do deep tissue massage (not "Rolfing"...

Online Suicide Messages

Jun 17 2012
Yes!

For one, get that person to call a local crisis line or suicide prevention service.  For a person to go online and say he is contemplating suicide only createshavoc.  What can anybody online on a computer do it help?  You can't do more than you did, express concern, but what you CAN DO is to encourage him (or her) to call a suicide prevention...

Support Groups for Bipolar Disorder

Jun 17 2012
Hi,

For one, I think already knows that you are a great leader (not much slips by Roy, btw).

I've been perplexed also about how tobring back a bipolar support network.  In 1997, I became a channel operator on the Harbor of Refuge.  There, like you as an advocate, we had people who were experienced in living with our bi...

More Than 1 Way to Skin a Cat (and interpret the Bible)

Jun 16 2012

Hiya,

No, I respect your way of seeing Christianity and I do believe we are on very much the same page.  My particular interest is with adolescents (and ones in trouble...most often withalcohol, it seems).  I was a bad penny as a kid, ran away from home at age 15 and drove my mother nuts.  The guy who I traveled with was alcoholic and beat the tar out of me in Texas (he wan...

Responding to a lady who listens (with great compassion)

Jun 15 2012

Hi,

I got long-winded yesterday and sent you a long reply, and the computer froze up in the midst of it (I have a used computer with limited memory...but then, so do I).

At any rate, what I wanted to say was that my religious upbringing was sort of a potpourri, grandparents Christian Scientist, Material grandmother Protestant, I was baptized Presbyterian (and belong to the Fi...

On Giving up on Women

Jun 13 2012
I feel higher than a kite in August, but I can tell you that part of our package involves going from sky diving to deep sea diving!  You put so much into what you write and that's why I'm drawn to poke you a little and tell you that I'm concerned for you.  I don't know what part spirituality plays in your life, but it has taken being at the bottom of the pit to allow...

Kudos for Backpacking!

Jun 13 2012
I like that, "go rent a cottage instead...!"  I've been backpacking for years and each time out is a teacher of something new; that's what so delightful about it, the constantchallenges.  Duct tape is an essential for doing what we call an "Oklahoma Quick Fix" for a tent repair.  I carry around a tube of something called "Shoe Goo" and it&#...

Hot Dpg Joke

Jun 13 2012
Hot Dawg!

Lance Armystrong went to Costco to buy a hot dog. The guy behind the counter recognized him and said, "Hey, aren't you the guy that won all the racesin France - and - DON'T YOU ALREADY HAVE THREE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CANCER - AND - DON'T YOU KNOW THAT HOT DOGS CAUSE CANCER?"

Lance replied, gosh, does that mean...

You Are NOT Alone

Jun 12 2012

Labels are interesting.  When I see Britney Spears, I guess I could say I feel "manic" or perhaps a bit, well, "shall we say 'extremely interested?'"

Whatbothers me is the fact that labels can get in the way of really understanding emotional states.  When I'm "sadl" and it lasts for an extended time, it is called "depression....

Remembering a Very Special Friend

Jun 11 2012

It could be our disorder and symptoms have the effect of sorting the wheat from the chaf (we see who really can hang in there with us and who can't).  It's for that reason that I am carefulabout who I choose to be friends with.

My second dad, George, was incredible.  I took Tegretol in the 80's and there was some concern about it, so my pdoc wanted me to stop it.&nbs...

Proper Diagnosing

Jun 11 2012

Having a thorough workup for the diagnosis is the best way to go, and with thorough testing and interviewing by a person who understands bipolar disorder is best.

I was fortunate to be referredto the Stanford Bipolar Disorder Clinic in Palo Alto and met with Dr. Terrence Ketter (psychiatrist and formerly with the National Institute of Mental Health).

My partner accompanied me and I...

Humor

Jun 11 2012

Hi,

I believe in laughter as a healing force f,or us, so I do my best (despite mny ancient age of 66) to recall jokes.

My dad used to drink alot and when he did, he would tell some of the, well, most "off color" of jokes, and I think my folks divorced partially due to how he was when he was inebriated.  But, of course, he also was bipolar (as both my brother and I wer...
