Costochondritis Flare Up

Oct 19 2009
I have suffered with costochondritis since 2002.  It has worsened along with many other conditions since 2004. Today doc sent me for blood work for rheumatoid arthritis.  I am in a bad flare and had a cortisone shot today.

Hi Sandinnalle,

I was just wondering about your costochondritis. That is what my doctor says is causing my chest pain. My question is how do they know that for sure???....The pain scares me so much. I have had the pain on and off for months. The past few weeks it has been really bad. The pain hurts most when I move or press on my chest (not when I take a deep breath in). A few years back I had a stress test with dye and they said my heart was fine. How do I know it is not my heart now and taht things haven't changed. Along with the rheumatoid arthritis I also have fibromyalgia and thyroid problems. But the chest pain scares me so much I am so afraid of having a heart attack and not knowing it because of thinking that the pain is caused form costochondritis. Can you give me any advice about this?...what would help it?....Anything I can do that will prove to me that it is costochondritis and not my heart? I would love to hear from you...

Thanks for your time!!!
Hope you are feeling better.

Julie
I have Fibro and I too have costochondritis. It scared me to the point of going to the ER. Of course I made it worse by giving myself an anxiety attack over it. Mine comes and goes but is acting up bad right now, which is how I found your post. I did a breathing test the other day at the allergists office and my lungs are fine but afterwards my ribs hurt for about 30min-1hr. It hurts when I push on it, hurts to breathe in or out too deep. Sometimes it's on my sides or back, but lately it's in the front, left side mostly..so I KNOW how scary it is. I am not a Dr and I cannot guarantee something has not changed with your heart but I think it is probably the fibro. I have done a lot of googling on it and it seems to be fairly common. I hope you are feeling better by now, I noticed your post is a few days old. I am here if you need to talk!! PM me if it's easier for you to keep track of conversations that way.
Feel better soon
Ashley
