My Day-to-Day Doings

Yesterday(02/19/11) the housekeeping staff washed the floors in
my room. I had to pack up everything - all my personal belongings -
including all my electronic and computer equipment and my indoor &
outdoor gardening plants & supplies so they could clean & wax the floors Boy, this asthma certainly changes one's daily actions. I encountered so many coughing attacks - work 10 minutes, rest for 5 minutes - well,it's a new way of life & I guess I'll just have to adjust to it. But it'll surely take a while to get accustomed to it!

Learning Something New

Apr 15 2011

Long, long ago when not so young me was in high school, I took a couple of years of the French and German languages.  Then in college I studied a little more German as I was in math/science andfor those years ago German was one international language of science.  It's my understanding in today's world the more usual languages are now Spanish and Chinese.  My how times change!!

Well, that doesn't help me now.  Where I live now here in the care center is a resident population that 's about 45% Hispanic heritage.  Many are indeed bilingual at least functionally.  But maybe even half are mostly Spanish speaking with just a few English words.  I am supposed to be Residents' Council Vice President to all the residents regardless of heritage or spoken language.  And this is a matter I take quite seriously.  So I've decided to and am learning Spanish - Buenos Dias!!  I also have the wonderful "Rosetta Stone" language learning system on my computer and got the Spanish language packs.  That should help!!

Well, yesterday was one of two "Spanish Club" meetings held here in the care center on a biweekly basis.  One is a "telenovella" watching group - Spanish language soaps - but the other is a coffee and chat group.  The group leader heard I was trying to learn Spanish and invited me to join.  Yesterday was my first meeting.  Buenos dias, como esta usted?(I don't have the Spanish language accent marks - sorry.) Siento bien!  I know very, very little Spanish.  But I'm game to give it the good try.  I enjoyed the meeting and especially the super strong and tasty Spanish coffee!!  I will look forward to the next meeting and try to use "Rosetta Stone" to help me.  Thanks for the sympathetic ear, dear diary,

Your Catherine - adios amigos!!
