| Tips for Maintaining Production |

The following tips, are ones I received when I was having production difficulties. Most of the tips come from a Lactation Consultant, some are from Nurses in the NICU and others are things that I found, while researching, online. 1. Start nursing your newly born child as soon as you possibly can. 2. Do not use a bottle for at least the first 4-6 weeks (longer if possible). 3. Co-bed. This allows you to smell the scent of your baby (as well as your baby smells you and feels safe). Smelling your child's scent is said to help keep production up. 4. Kangaroo - basically, hold your child, chest to chest (no clothes between) and sleep/rest that way. You can also place your child in a sling, and carry him/her that way, while you are taking care of houshold tasks. 5. If you have to pump, make sure to do so no less than 8-10 times per day and for 20 minutes. It is better if you have a dual electrical pump as it is more consistent than hand expressing and isn't as hard on your hands as hand expressing or a manual pump are. 6. Once you have fed your chid, pump both breasts. That will empty your breasts completely, which stimulates the breasts to manufacturer more. 7. You will always have more milk in the morning (because you burn less calories, while sleeping, than you do while you go about your day). Be sure to either feed or pump shortly after you get up. 8. If you must return to the office, have a picture of your child and a piece of clothing or a blanket (unwashed) with you. The site of your child, and the scent, will help you while you are pumping. 9. Make sure and get as much sleep as is possible. When you child slees, you sleep. At night, co-bedding allows you to only halfway wake, set you and your baby up for him/her to nurse and the both of you can fall back to sleep. 10. Buy comfortable bras (nursing, maternity or regluar) that are not too tight. They shouldn't feel like a sport bra does. The tighter your bra, the more you are telling your breasts that they do not need to produce as much milk. 11. On the bra note, also be sure, if you are going to wear ones with underwires, the underwires but come up under the middle of your arm-pit. If they do not, you run the risk of them pinching mammery glands which can lead to mastitis (very painful!)
Here are a few of the suggestions, given to me, of things to eat or drink that help production. 1. Drink a beer a day (preferably at night) - The theory is that the hops helps with production. The darker the beer, the more hops, the more you produce. The reality of this is, the alcohol actually dries you up. 2. Reglan - This medication is prescribed for acid reflux. For some reason, it also increases milk production. 3. Mother's Milk Tea - an herbal mixture that, when drank, increases production. (I couldnt' get over the taste long enough to see if it really worked).
4. Fenugreek - 2-3, 610mg capsules with every meal, and plenty of water. Warning: Both you and your baby will smell like maple syrup. Best of luck to you.
