The history of personal choice for people with developmental disabilities is brief - just a few decmere blink in the history of mankind!!!
It wasn't until the 1960s that people with development disabilities were even considered capa making their own decsiions. Here's a quick look at the development of personal choice and self determination and the historical events that changed the way people with disabilities view their choose. In 1950, parents of children with developmental disabilities band together to form The Association for Retarded Children, the forerunner of The Arc of today, to push for educational services and other opportunties for their children. As a result, more people with disabilities come into contect with general society.
At the time, most people with developmental disabilities are isolated in institutions or private homes, receive little practical education and are largely unemployed. assumed to be unable and uninterested in making choices related to their, lives, people with developmental disabilities are rarely asked for their opinions.
Written by Maryanne!!! This was from a course that I had taken through The Minnesota Governer's Council on Developmental
Disabilities. I hope that reads and enjoys. I am only sharing this whom wants to read it. I thinks this will help and serve for the needs of children with special needs....
